Moisés Caicedo's Injury Setback Ahead of Chelsea vs Arsenal Match

Moisés Caicedo was nowhere to be seen when Chelsea’s teamsheet dropped for their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday, Sept. 6 – a significant setback for Xabi Alonso just as it looked like his midfield enforcer was edging back to full fitness.

The Ecuador international had only just returned from injury, but his stop-start opening to the season continued in frustrating fashion. He had already been a surprise absentee from Chelsea’s league opener against Fulham, with Alonso revealing at the time that Caicedo had suffered a “minor setback.”

That knock ruled him out of the midweek Carabao Cup win over Luton Town as well. Chelsea coped, they advanced, but the plan was always to reintegrate their key midfielder as soon as he was ready.

Brighton away last weekend was supposed to be that step. Instead, it turned into another warning sign. Caicedo came off the bench in the second half and lasted only 14 minutes before he had to be withdrawn, prompting fresh concern on the touchline. Alonso later admitted the problem “wasn't something new,” hinting at an issue that had never fully cleared.

Even so, there was late optimism around Stamford Bridge that he might make it for Arsenal. Alonso confirmed Caicedo pushed hard to be involved and was close to being declared ready.

“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” the Chelsea manager told Sky Sports before kickoff, underlining the decision to leave him out of the squad entirely.

So Chelsea went into one of their marquee fixtures of the season without the player signed to anchor their midfield, a calculated gamble on his long-term fitness rather than a roll of the dice for one game.

The message is clear: they want Caicedo available for the long haul, not just for one high-profile afternoon against the Gunners.
