Mourinho Defines Valverde's Role: Only as a Midfielder

Federico Valverde has worn almost every hat Real Madrid could hand him. Captain, yes, but also full-back, winger, box-to-box runner, emergency plug for whatever hole needed filling. For years, he has been the club’s Swiss army knife, opened and unfolded by one coach after another.

That era may be coming to an end.

Jose Mourinho, back in charge at the Bernabeu and already stamping his authority on the squad, does not want Valverde scattered across the pitch. According to MARCA, the Portuguese coach views the Uruguayan as one thing only: a midfielder. More precisely, a deep-lying midfielder who anchors and organises, not a utility man shuffled from flank to flank.

And the early weeks of the season have backed up that conviction.

A fixed role, a flying start

Valverde has started both of Real Madrid’s games so far, stationed in a double pivot alongside Bernardo Silva. From there, he has controlled tempo, broken lines and, crucially for Mourinho, protected the back line.

Against Real Sociedad, his performance read like a manifesto for why he should stay in the middle.

• Two recoveries.
• One interception.

Not once was he dribbled past. He won two duels, completed 93% of his passes and still found time to influence the game going forward. He assisted Kylian Mbappé and registered two shots on goal, underlining that a deeper role does not mean disappearing from the attacking picture.

This is the version of Valverde Mourinho wants: disciplined, central, decisive.

With reliable options now in place at full-back and on the right wing, the coach has no need to push his captain wide or backwards. The message is clear. Valverde belongs in central midfield, where his energy and intelligence can dictate games rather than patch problems.

The Tchouameni question

There is, however, a looming complication.

Valverde’s smooth start in the pivot owes something to Aurelien Tchouameni’s absence. The Frenchman has long been Madrid’s natural holding midfielder, the default choice at the base of midfield and, on paper, an obvious partner for Bernardo Silva in Mourinho’s preferred structure.

Injury has opened the door for Valverde to step into that zone and impress. He has done exactly that, climbing the internal hierarchy and earning the manager’s trust in the process.

But Tchouameni is closing in on a return.

When he is fit, Mourinho will face a hard selection call: does he restore the Frenchman as the primary pivot, shift Valverde slightly higher, or ask one of them to accept a reduced role? With the coach so adamant about keeping Valverde in midfield, the battle will not be about positions anymore, only about status.

For now, Valverde owns the shirt. Soon, Tchouameni will come knocking for it.
