Mourinho's Warning to Raúl Asencio: A Real Madrid Player 24/7

José Mourinho has delivered a sharp reminder of what it means to wear the Real Madrid badge, issuing a public warning to defender Raúl Asencio after the player’s recent conviction for a traffic offence.

The 23-year-old, a Madrid youth product since 2017, was found guilty of driving under the influence by Gran Canaria's High Court of Justice on Wednesday. Police stopped him at a checkpoint on the island on August 16, where he tested four times over the legal alcohol limit. The punishment was heavy: a €14,400 ($16,700) fine and an eight-month suspension of his driving licence.

Mourinho did not hide his displeasure when asked about Asencio’s future ahead of Madrid’s trip to Real Betis on Friday. The Portuguese coach acknowledged the defender’s work ethic at the training ground, but drew a hard line on behaviour away from it.

“I spoke with him when I arrived,” Mourinho said. “I spoke with him about things from the past. Since I arrived ... I haven’t spoken to him since.

“At Valdebebas, I’d say he’s an exemplary professional. When he was fit, nobody trained harder or better than him. Now that he’s been injured for weeks, he’s the first to arrive and the last to leave. He’s extremely dedicated to his recovery.

“But a Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. Seven days a week. And 12 months a year. Everything you do outside your professional life is still Real Madrid. It continues to damage the prestige of a club that is untouchable. That can’t be touched. And with that, I’m practically saying that ... I’m not happy.

“We all make mistakes. But accumulated mistakes ... That’s a different story."

The phrase “accumulated mistakes” hung in the air. Mourinho knew what he was alluding to, and so did everyone in the room.

Pressed again on the case, he confirmed that the club has “opened an investigation” into the matter, underlining that this is no minor internal issue to be quietly brushed aside.

Legal clouds and a manager’s dilemma

The drink-driving conviction is only the latest episode in a turbulent period for Asencio.

On Thursday, a Spanish court acquitted the defender of charges related to the distributing of sexual images of a woman and a minor without their consent. The case had cast a long shadow over both player and club. While Asencio walked free of those charges, three of his former Real Madrid youth teammates — Andrés García, Ferrán Ruiz and Juan Rodríguez — accepted a one-year suspended jail sentence for distributing child pornography.

With that case now closed, the legal cloud has at least partially lifted. The sporting picture is far less forgiving.

Asencio has not played a single minute this season due to injury. During his absence, Dean Huijsen has nailed down a place in Mourinho’s back four, while Antonio Rüdiger and Ibrahima Konaté have been sharing the other centre-back role. Éder Militão is still to return, and 19-year-old Mario Rivas turned heads with his performances in preseason.

The competition is fierce. The margin for error, especially off the pitch, is shrinking fast.

Mourinho’s message was clear: the door is not slammed shut, but it will not stay open forever. For a defender battling injury, legal baggage and a stacked depth chart, the next move could decide whether his story at Real Madrid is one of redemption or a slow fade out of the picture.
