Newcastle Faces Injury Woes as Elanga Misses Key Matches

Newcastle United’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds United came with a sting that could last far longer than a bruised ego. Anthony Elanga, one of Matthias Jaissle’s most dangerous outlets, was missing from the squad at Elland Road – and the news since has only deepened the concern on Tyneside.

The Swedish FA has confirmed that Elanga will miss all of Sweden’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Romania and Poland because of injury. Instead of joining up with the national team, the winger will undergo another MRI scan next week as Newcastle try to pin down the full extent of the problem.

The statement from Sweden underlined how stretched their options already are.

“A number of names are missing and several are due to injuries,” it read. “Isak Hien, who was injured during the World Cup, is still not available. Anthony Elanga has suffered an injury in the past week and will therefore miss the meeting.”

For Newcastle, the timing is grim. Elanga is already ruled out of Saturday’s home game against Hull City, and when Sweden’s two Nations League matches are added to the schedule, he is guaranteed to miss at least four games.

The real fear inside the club is that this is only the starting point. If the upcoming scan confirms a more serious issue, Jaissle could be without a bona fide starter well beyond the initial weeks-long break.

That would be a heavy blow. Elanga opened the campaign in sharp form, scoring in each of Newcastle’s first two Premier League matches against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. His pace and direct running on the right have been central to the way Jaissle wants his side to attack. Then came the setback that ruled him out of the trip to Elland Road, and the mood around his situation has darkened since.

Newcastle must now wrestle with two questions at once: how long they will be without one of their most productive attackers, and who steps into that right-wing berth while he recovers.

The answers, and that MRI result, could shape the early stretch of their season.
