Newcastle United's Defensive Concerns Ahead of Liverpool Clash

Newcastle United are counting down to Liverpool with more questions than answers at full-back and precious little time to solve them.

Matthias Jaissle has less than a fortnight and only a handful of serious training sessions left before his first Premier League game in charge, and a summer already disrupted by transfers and injuries is now tightening the squeeze on his defensive options.

Hall back in the frame, but spotlight stays on his fitness

The initial alarm around Lewis Hall has eased. The left-back left Newcastle’s training camp in Spain in early August in what the club described as a precaution, and that judgment looks to have been vindicated.

Hall has already featured in the friendly against Everton at Murrayfield on Wednesday and, fitness permitting, should be available to face Liverpool on August 23 — assuming he is still a Newcastle player by then, with his future not entirely settled.

Chris Waugh of The Athletic reported before the Everton game that Hall was due back in full training on Tyneside and could be involved in Newcastle’s remaining preseason fixtures, either in Edinburgh or in one of the two practice matches at St James’ Park next weekend. The club confirmed that Hall, along with other recovering players, has been working through tailored fitness programmes at The Knox, Newcastle’s training centre.

So Hall is back on the grass. The bigger issue is whether he can stack up enough minutes and conditioning in the next two weeks to hit the Premier League tempo from the first whistle against Liverpool.

Miley boost in midfield

There is at least one clear positive for Jaissle.

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope and Simon Jones, Newcastle expect Lewis Miley to be ready for the opener after his recovery from a broken leg. The young midfielder has been working his way back and is now being lined up for involvement against Liverpool, giving Newcastle an extra body and a different profile in the middle of the pitch.

For a squad that has felt stretched at times this summer, having Miley back is no small lift.

Livramento ruled out of Liverpool clash

The news on the opposite flank is far less encouraging.

Tino Livramento is set to miss the Liverpool game as he continues his rehabilitation from the calf injury that forced him out of England’s World Cup squad. His situation is clear-cut: he will not make it in time for Matchday 1.

Hope and Jones report that the 23-year-old defender is currently in the United States, working through his recovery programme away from Newcastle. The club’s expectation, according to their report, is that Livramento could return on the second weekend of the campaign, when Newcastle travel to Tottenham.

If that timetable holds, Jaissle will be without his first-choice right-back for the visit of Liverpool but may have him back in contention for the trip to Spurs on Matchday 2. It leaves a gap that will have to be bridged either by a makeshift solution or by rapid movement in the market.

Transfer urgency rises at full-back

Newcastle were already exploring options to strengthen at full-back before the window closes. This latest injury picture only sharpens that need.

With Livramento sidelined and Hall still building up his fitness, Jaissle heads towards a season opener against one of the league’s most dangerous attacks knowing his wide defensive areas are his most vulnerable. Any hesitation in recruitment now carries obvious risk.

As things stand, Newcastle look likely to walk out against Liverpool without Livramento and with Hall expected to start the campaign, but still racing the clock to be fully ready.

Two weeks to go, one of the division’s fiercest front lines waiting, and a back line still under construction. How bold will Newcastle be in the days that remain?
