Santos walk into another decisive week with a familiar cloud hanging over them: will Neymar set foot on the synthetic turf at Allianz Parque?

Head coach Cuca has already made one thing clear — this call won’t be his alone. The Santos boss underlined that any decision on his star forward’s involvement will be shared across the club’s technical staff, and with the player himself at the centre of it.

“I will talk to him and we will make our decisions,” Cuca told ESPN Brazil. “With him and the entire squad. We'll determine what is best to do.”

No bravado. No ultimatums. Just a manager weighing the risk around his most decisive player.

The concern is not new. Neymar’s relationship with artificial pitches is openly hostile. After aggravating an ankle problem against Atletico Mineiro last year on synthetic grass, he took his anger public, unleashing on social media: “It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***.”

That frustration has hardened into a stance. Whenever Allianz Parque comes up, so does the tension.

In the mixed zone, when pressed about the possibility of playing at Palmeiras’ home ground, Neymar cut off the speculation with a touch of irritation.

“Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday,” he said, refusing to commit. “I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf].”

The message was blunt: not now, not yet.

His view of the venue itself has long been unambiguous. “Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible,” he has said previously. The comparison he drew was scathing, likening the surface to a small-sided pitch. “Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries. Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch.”

So Santos edge toward another high-profile clash with a familiar dilemma: protect their talisman on a surface he openly detests, or send him into a stadium he insists he cannot tolerate.

At some point, someone will have to step onto that synthetic turf. Whether it’s Neymar remains the burning question.
