Oxford United Secures First League Win Under Ramsey at Stevenage
Aaron Ramsey’s first League One victory as Oxford United boss was never going to be pretty. It didn’t need to be. It needed grit, discipline and one ruthless spell after the break – and his side delivered all three in a hard-earned win at Stevenage.
For 45 minutes, Oxford had to survive. Ramsey knew it. His players knew it. Stevenage turned their home ground into exactly what the new head coach had warned about: a “really tough place to go”, full of aerial bombardment, second balls and pressure around the box.
Oxford didn’t blink.
They defended deep, bodies on the line, and treated every cross as a test of character. Ramsey later praised how they “defended the box superbly”, and that first-half resilience became the bedrock of everything that followed.
The reward came after the interval.
With the storm weathered, Oxford began to step higher, to pass with more authority, to finally “take the game” to Stevenage as Ramsey had demanded. Control shifted, almost quietly at first, then decisively.
The breakthrough arrived through Gatlin O'Donkor, who struck in the second half to give the visitors the lead their growing composure merited. It was a goal built on patience and then a flash of quality – and it came from a player whose story on the day was overshadowed by another.
Stan Mills, making his first appearance since Ramsey confirmed he has agreed to join Preston North End in January, came off the bench and changed the rhythm of the game. The 22-year-old injected energy and incision, and it was his assist that teed up O’Donkor’s opener.
The away end knew exactly what it meant. Mills was greeted with a warm, almost grateful reception from the Oxford supporters, a reaction that clearly struck his manager.
“The reception that he got was really pleasing and Stan deserves that,” Ramsey said, highlighting the consistency and quality Mills has shown “over the last few years” and his right to enjoy “that moment with the fans”.
Once in front, Oxford did not sit back. They tightened their grip. The pressure told again when Cameron Brannagan stepped up from the penalty spot to double the lead, a cool finish that seemed to put the contest beyond Stevenage.
Almost.
Deep into added time, the hosts finally forced a way through, pulling a goal back to set up a nervy finale. Old doubts could have crept in. Instead, Oxford held firm one last time, saw out the danger and banked their first three points of the League One season.
For Ramsey, it was more than just a win. It was proof that his players could “stand up to the test” in one of the division’s more unforgiving away fixtures, and turn a defensive platform into control and, ultimately, victory.
Next up is Huddersfield away on Tuesday, 1 September. Another trip, another test of nerve and structure. If Oxford can defend as they did here and carry that second-half authority with them, this first win under Ramsey may feel less like a one-off and more like the start of something.
