Palmeiras Dominates Santos in Copa do Brasil Clash

Palmeiras did not just beat Santos. They dismantled them.

With Neymar left out of the matchday squad, Santos walked into Allianz Parque on Wednesday night without their star attraction and walked out with a 3-0 deficit that flatters them more than it hurts Palmeiras.

Lopez lights the fuse

The tone was set early. Santos backed off, Palmeiras stepped on the ball, and Flaco Lopez took it personally.

Given space well outside the box, the forward unleashed a long-range strike that ripped past the Santos goalkeeper and ignited the home crowd. One clean hit, one brutal reminder of the gap between the sides on the night.

On this evidence, Santos paid a heavy price for that call.

With Neymar out and Gabigol only introduced after the break, Cuca’s side looked blunt and predictable in the final third. They saw plenty of green shirts, very little green grass. Palmeiras’ backline held firm, rarely stretched, rarely panicked.

Palmeiras turn the screw

If the first half belonged to Palmeiras, the second underlined the gulf.

Lopez, already buzzing from his opener, delivered the blow that effectively ended the contest. Agustin Giay bent in a sharp delivery from the right and Lopez attacked it, glancing a precise header into the net to make it 3-0. Clinical. Ruthless. Tie, for now, under lock and key.

Santos were fortunate the damage stopped there.

Giay burst through one-on-one later on and wasted a glorious chance to add a fourth. Mauricio did the same, also denied when clean through against the Santos goalkeeper. Two big openings, both squandered, and still the scoreboard felt harsh from a Santos perspective.

Palmeiras could have turned a commanding cushion into outright humiliation. They settled instead for control.

Santos staring at a brutal stretch

For Santos, the calendar offers no mercy.

They now head into a high-stakes away derby against Corinthians in the Campeonato Brasileiro with bruised confidence and tired legs. There is no time for self-pity, only response.

After that comes the real mountain: the return leg at Vila Belmiro, where they must somehow erase a three-goal deficit against a Palmeiras side that barely looked troubled in the first meeting. Then a trip to Internacional waits on the other side of that.

Cuca needs Neymar back in the starting XI, not as a symbol but as a solution. Santos lack edge without him. They lack invention. They lack fear factor.
