Patrick Vieira Addresses Sadio Mane’s Absence in Senegal Squad

Patrick Vieira has moved quickly to end the debate around Sadio Mane’s absence from his first Senegal squad, insisting the Al-Nassr star was omitted for fitness reasons only.

The new head coach stunned many when his maiden list for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Mozambique and Ethiopia dropped without the country’s talisman. “My choice was a decision that came from the heart, and not for the money,” he said.

Vieira described a swift courtship with the Senegalese Football Federation. One conversation, he suggested, was enough to convince him.

“From the very first meeting that brought me together with the federation president, I immediately agreed to take on this challenge,” he added.

Behind that conviction lies the squad he is inheriting.

Senegal already stand among Africa’s elite, and Vieira made it clear that the emerging talent pool played a major role in his decision. He sees a group ready to grow again, and a chance to inject the know-how he gathered at the highest level of the game.

“There was an exceptional generation of players on the verge of emerging, and there was a real opportunity before me to put my top-level experience at their service,” he said.

His stated objective is simple and ambitious: channel that experience into a fresh chapter for the national team and build a new project with the “Lions of Teranga” alongside the federation.
