Plymouth Secures First Away Win in League One

Plymouth claimed their first away win of the Sky Bet League One season with a sharp, 3-2 victory over winless Doncaster – a scoreline that flattered the hosts far more than it did Tom Cleverley’s side.

For long spells, this was controlled, composed, and ruthless from Argyle.

Will Evans set the tone on 28 minutes. Plymouth had grown steadily into the contest and when Oliver Irow’s strike was pushed out by Tommy Simkin, Evans reacted first, drilling the rebound home to give the visitors a lead their increasing dominance deserved.

Doncaster offered flickers before the break. Alfie May went closest, meeting a cross with an audacious bicycle kick that was deflected over the bar. It lifted the home crowd, but not the scoreline.

Second Half

The restart briefly changed that.

Just six minutes into the second half, May finally had his moment. Owen Bailey was bundled over in the box by Matty Sorinola and the referee pointed to the spot. May stepped up in the 51st minute and buried the penalty, dragging Doncaster level and hinting at a momentum shift.

It didn’t last.

The equaliser stung Plymouth into life. They tightened up, pushed higher, and the pressure told. On 74 minutes, Bim Pepple was slipped into space and, with time to pick his spot, finished coolly to restore the visitors’ advantage.

From there, Cleverley’s team took charge. Doncaster’s shape loosened, the home side chasing shadows as Plymouth moved the ball with assurance and waited for the next mistake.

It came on 83 minutes. A defensive mix-up at the back left substitute Caleb Watts with the simplest of tasks: he seized on the error and rolled the ball into an empty net to make it 3-1 and, effectively, to seal the points.

Only in stoppage time did Doncaster stir again. Deep into added minutes, Bayley McCann swung in a free-kick and Sean Grehan rose to thump a header past the keeper. A fierce finish, but nothing more than consolation.

By then, the game was gone. Plymouth had their first away win of the campaign; Doncaster were left still searching for their first victory and running out of excuses.
