Portsmouth Boss Apologizes After Fratton Park Incident

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has issued an apology to Cardiff City’s players after an ugly clash between a home supporter and Krystian Bielik marred an otherwise routine win at Fratton Park.

The incident came in the 72nd minute of Pompey’s 2-0 Championship victory, just as the game seemed to be drifting towards a comfortable home finish. Bielik went across to collect the ball for a Cardiff restart near the touchline. What should have been a mundane moment exploded.

Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy later said the Poland international “got slapped in the face” by a fan. Footage shared on social media showed Bielik reacting, grabbing a young supporter around the upper body as stewards and players rushed in.

From the stands, several Portsmouth fans immediately gestured towards the pitch, indicating they believed the youngster had been grabbed by the throat. The atmosphere, already hostile in the way Fratton Park prides itself on, suddenly turned volatile.

As tempers flared and players tried to refocus, another flashpoint followed. A separate supporter hurled a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. That was enough for stewards and security. Both fans involved were identified and ejected from the stadium.

After the final whistle, Mousinho did not try to play down what had happened.

“The referee said that, as Krystian went to get the ball, there was a little bit of a kerfuffle and one of the supporters struck him,” he explained. “It wasn’t a good incident. I have just seen him there, and he was OK, but that’s not the point, we can’t be having that.”

Fratton Park’s noise and edge have become a key part of Portsmouth’s rise back into the Championship. Mousinho knows it, and he wants that intensity. Just not like this.

“We want to create a really difficult atmosphere at Fratton Park, we have done that successfully over the past few years,” he said. “Sometimes it tips over, I understand that, I don’t think it needs to tip over to that extent.

“We extend our apologies to the players, Cardiff and make sure we can try to cut it out.”

Portsmouth left with three points and a statement win. Cardiff left with frustration and a flashpoint that will not disappear quickly. The next question is whether the authorities decide that Fratton Park must answer for more than just the result.
