Real Madrid Midfield Reshuffle: Bellingham Takes Deeper Role Against Inter

Real Madrid will walk into their first Champions League night of the season without two of José Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenants – and it changes everything in midfield.

Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are both suspended for the clash with Inter, a double blow that strips Madrid of two of their most influential players and leaves Mourinho with no choice but to redraw his entire plan for the centre of the pitch.

On El Larguero on Cadena SER, Antonio Romero laid out the scenario bluntly: the big adjustment is expected to involve Jude Bellingham. The England star, usually unleashed closer to goal, is tipped to drop a line and take on a deeper role to plug the gap.

“It’s natural for Bellingham to drop back a little,” Romero said, underlining the magnitude of the occasion. This isn’t a night for experiments. “It’s a very important match, it’s the team’s first appearance in the Champions League, which is the ultimate goal for the big clubs in Europe. In the Champions League, there’s no room for experimentation.”

Mourinho still has alternatives. New signing Sergio Martinez could be thrown in from the start, or Trent Alexander-Arnold could be pushed inside from his usual position to help construct play in midfield. Yet the preference, Romero insisted, remains clear: if there is a gap to fill, Bellingham is the man to fill it, regardless of how many minutes are already in his legs.

Romero moved quickly to cool any doubts over the 21-year-old’s condition. “He is at peak physical fitness,” he said. Bellingham did look a touch fatigued in Madrid’s last outing, but Romero framed that as the inevitable consequence of his workload. The midfielder has been everywhere – covering ground, pressing, linking play, and working relentlessly “for Mbappé, Vinicius and all his teammates”.

While Madrid juggle absences and tactical tweaks, Inter arrive in a very different mood.

On the same programme, analyst Bruno Alimani highlighted the Italian side’s perfect domestic start. Inter are “one of only two teams in Italy to have won all three of their matches” this season, he pointed out, a run that has sent confidence soaring in Simone Inzaghi’s camp.

The explanation, in Alimani’s eyes, lies in continuity. The core that dragged Inter to two finals in the last four years is still intact. Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolò Barella, Lautaro Martínez and Hakan Çalhanoğlu remain the backbone, giving the Nerazzurri a familiar structure and a hardened competitive edge. A recent, emotionally charged win over Napoli has only sharpened their belief.

Yet Alimani also sees cracks where there once was steel – at the back.

“I think their level has dropped slightly, especially in goalkeeping and defence,” he said. Yann Sommer’s departure has altered the picture in goal. Josep Martinez has come in, but Alimani does not see him as the ideal first-choice for a side with Champions League ambitions.

The same doubts stretch across the back line. “In defence, it is true that they signed players such as Akanji and Stones, both of whom left Manchester City under less than ideal circumstances,” he added, hinting at a unit that no longer carries quite the same air of reliability.

Up front, though, Inter look anything but diminished. Lautaro Martínez remains the reference point and the form man. Alimani underlined the momentum the captain brings into this tie: “Lautaro scored two goals in the last match, and they are coming off a thrilling win over Napoli, which means they will be in high spirits.”

So the stage is set. Madrid, forced into improvisation without Güler and Bernardo Silva, leaning on Bellingham’s versatility and physical power. Inter, riding a perfect start and Lautaro’s goals, yet walking a finer line in goal and defence than in previous years.

On a Champions League night that “leaves no room for experimentation”, as Romero put it, the question is simple: will Madrid’s reshaped midfield hold firm against an Inter side that already smells blood?
