Real Madrid Faces Centre-Back Crisis Ahead of La Liga Opener

Real Madrid’s season has not even kicked off and Jose Mourinho is already juggling problems at the heart of his defence.

With Espanyol looming on the opening weekend of La Liga, the Portuguese coach has just three fit senior centre-backs. For a club that expects to compete on every front from day one, that is a thin line to walk.

Centre-back crisis before a ball is kicked

On paper, Mourinho has five recognised central defenders. In reality, two of them are unavailable.

Éder Militao is still working his way back from the serious injury issues that wrecked his previous campaign. The Brazilian is progressing, but not fast enough to be considered for the league opener.

Raul Asencio, who was expected to push for more minutes this season, has been hit by a thigh injury picked up in pre-season. The prognosis is around six weeks out, ruling him out of the early fixtures and stripping away another option.

That leaves Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen and new signing Ibrahima Konaté as the only senior centre-backs Mourinho can call on when Espanyol arrive.

All eyes now turn to Konaté.

The summer arrival still has a short window to sharpen his fitness, with two weeks and a friendly against Schalke on the schedule before La Liga begins. Real Madrid did not sign him to ease his way in gently, but the circumstances might force Mourinho to lean on him earlier and more heavily than planned.

Huijsen, meanwhile, is walking back into a central role he knows well. A minor muscle issue kept him out of the team’s first official match, yet last season he was the most-used centre-back in the squad. Now, with Militao and Asencio sidelined, he could be asked to anchor the defence from the very first whistle of the campaign.

Rüdiger completes the trio. The German endured his own knee problems last season, but he has stepped back onto the pitch in recent weeks, logging 45 minutes against Ferencváros before starting against Deportivo. His experience and aggression suddenly look indispensable.

One more injury, though, and Mourinho is staring at a full-blown emergency.

Academy doors open as Martinez and Rivas step forward

The shortage has created an opportunity lower down the ladder.

Joan Martinez and Mario Rivas have used pre-season to push their names into Mourinho’s thoughts. Both started the club’s first two friendlies and have impressed enough to be considered genuine alternatives as the fourth centre-back in the squad.

For two academy defenders, this is the kind of unexpected opening that can reshape a career. For Mourinho, it is a calculated risk he may have no choice but to take if the medical room stays busy.

A historic academy exodus – and more to come

While the first team wrestles with defensive depth, the academy is experiencing a very different kind of problem: departures on a historic scale.

Real Madrid have already cashed in on several youth players this summer. The next big move is expected to be Jacobo Ortega, who is set to join Strasbourg. That transfer would make him the most expensive sale of a Real Madrid youth player yet to debut for the first team.

And the outflow is not stopping there.

Manuel Ángel and David Jiménez are also heading for the exit. According to AS, both have effectively reached the end of their cycle with Castilla. Interest in the pair stretches across La Liga, the Segunda División and beyond, but no agreement has yet been finalised.

The club is treating their situation carefully. Both players have been training separately and were omitted from Castilla’s pre-season friendlies and matchday squads, a clear decision to avoid any injury that might complicate their sales.

Once Ortega’s transfer and other outgoing deals are completed, the academy is expected to generate more than €200 million in revenue this summer. Internally, that figure is already being described as historic.

Two talents on the brink of a new chapter

Manuel Ángel and David Jiménez are not just any academy products. They were central figures in Álvaro Arbeloa’s treble-winning youth generation, alongside Nico Paz and Gonzalo García.

Manuel Ángel, a 22-year-old midfielder who joined La Fábrica in 2014, has long been viewed as one of Valdebebas’ standout prospects. Ambidextrous, calm in possession and tactically sharp, he even broke into the first team towards the end of last season, making seven appearances. The next step is clear: he needs a club willing to hand him regular minutes at senior level.

Jiménez brings a different profile. An attacking full-back with one of the most highly regarded right feet in the academy, he has drawn stylistic comparisons to Dani Carvajal. His leadership and relentless, forward-thinking approach have been praised by coaches, and he too featured for the first team last season, impressing under both Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa.

Now, both players stand at the same crossroads. Real Madrid are ready to sell, the players want a platform, and their entourages are waiting for the right proposal to land on the table.

At one end of the club, Mourinho is counting centre-backs and hoping his back line survives August. At the other, some of Valdebebas’ finest products are walking out the door, fuelling a record-breaking summer of sales.
