Real Madrid vs Inter: Mourinho Faces Midfield Crisis Ahead of Champions League Opener

Real Madrid wanted a smooth launch to their new Champions League league phase. Instead, they arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night bruised by a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis and stripped of the heart of their midfield before Inter Milan even step off the plane.

Kick-off is at 9 p.m. CEST. The noise will be familiar. The problems are not.

Midfield wiped out

José Mourinho has a selection crisis right where he least needs it. Four midfielders are either suspended or doubtful, three of them banned and one racing the clock.

Eight Real Madrid players are listed as unavailable. Raúl Asencio, Endrick, Éder Militão, Thiago Pitarch and Rodrygo are all out with injuries. Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are suspended for the Champions League opener.

Those three bans cut straight through Mourinho’s plans. Camavinga and Güler are serving suspensions carried over from last season, while Silva sits out after his red card in a previous clash against Real Madrid.

That leaves Aurélien Tchouaméni as the big question mark. He has been working his way back from a muscular problem and could return, but Mourinho has not guaranteed a place in the starting XI. Endrick, also recovering from a muscular issue, remains a doubt after missing the opening matches of the season.

Mourinho has admitted the club came into this game with “known issues” and talked about having “3, 4, or 5 options” to cover the midfield absences. He has not revealed which path he will take. He rarely does before a big European night.

What is clear: any solution will be improvised.

Inter travel light

On the other side, Inter Milan land in Madrid with far fewer headaches.

UEFA list no confirmed absentees for Cristian Chivu’s side. The only concern is Federico Dimarco, whose knee problem threatens to disrupt Inter’s balance down the left. He picked up the injury in Serie A action against Napoli and remains a doubt for the Bernabéu.

If Dimarco fails his late fitness test, Inter will need to rework that flank, but the rest of the squad looks strong. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolò Barella, Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martínez are all expected to feature, giving Chivu a core of leaders and technicians in every line.

In pure selection terms, Inter walk into this tie with a clear advantage. Real Madrid must juggle injuries and three Champions League suspensions. Chivu, by contrast, can focus on details, not damage control.

Predicted lineups: risk and reward

UEFA’s latest predicted lineups suggest both managers will mirror each other with three at the back.

For Real Madrid, Mourinho is tipped to go with a 3-5-2. Thibaut Courtois is expected in goal, protected by a back three of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen.

Across midfield, the projection has Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella as wing-backs, with Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Brahim Díaz forming the central unit. Up front, the star power remains untouched: Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé are expected to lead the line.

Inter’s predicted XI also leans on a three-man defence. Josep Martínez is tipped to start in goal, behind Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Bastoni. Dumfries, Çalhanoğlu, Barella, Piotr Zieliński and Dimarco are listed across midfield, with Lautaro Martínez partnered by Francesco Pio Esposito in attack.

Those lineups, though, rest on one key variable on each side. Tchouaméni for Madrid. Dimarco for Inter. If either fails their final fitness checks, the tactical picture shifts again.

The official team sheets will drop around an hour before kick-off. By then, we’ll know whether Mourinho is walking into this Champions League opener with a patched-up midfield or without one at all — and whether Inter are ready to press that advantage in the heart of the Bernabéu.
