Real Madrid's Midfield Formation Under Mourinho: Silva and Valverde
Real Madrid’s new era under Jose Mourinho is about to begin, and the first big call has already been made in the heart of the pitch.
For the La Liga opener against Espanyol, Mourinho is expected to build his midfield around a double pivot of Bernardo Silva and Federico Valverde, with Aurelien Tchouameni left playing catch-up.
Mourinho’s first big statement
As reported by MARCA and picked up by Madrid Xtra, Bernardo and Valverde are set to occupy the two deeper midfield roles in Madrid’s first league game of the 2026-27 season. It is a decision that goes beyond a simple team sheet. This double pivot is shaping up as the tactical backbone of Mourinho’s new project at the Bernabeu.
Bernardo Silva, signed to be a difference-maker, will not float around the final third as a pure No. 10. He is expected to drop into one of those two deeper slots and dictate play from there, acting as the side’s main creative hub while facing the whole pitch. The ball will run through him.
The real argument has been over who stands next to him.
Valverde vs Tchouameni – battle delayed, not decided
On paper, Tchouameni looks tailor-made for this structure. The Frenchman is the closest thing Mourinho has to a classic holding midfielder: strong positionally, aggressive in duels, and reliable in screening the back line. In a two-man midfield, that profile usually walks straight into the XI.
Valverde offers a different kind of security. Now Real Madrid’s first captain, the Uruguayan brings relentless running, range, and a voice that carries in the dressing room and on the pitch. He covers huge spaces, presses high, and can surge forward without the ball. If Bernardo is the organiser, Valverde is the engine.
Under normal conditions, Mourinho’s first major midfield dilemma would have been a straight shootout: Tchouameni’s defensive balance against Valverde’s all-court influence. One spot, two heavyweight contenders.
The situation around Tchouameni has changed that equation.
Fitness swing opens the door
Tchouameni has not played a single minute in pre-season because of muscular discomfort. While the issue is not expected to be long term, the absence has left him well behind his rivals in match rhythm and sharpness.
Reports in Spain suggest he could recover in time to be available against Espanyol, but availability is not the same as readiness. After missing the entire pre-season programme, dropping him straight into a high-intensity league opener would be a gamble Mourinho does not need to take.
So the decision becomes simpler. Valverde, fully fit and already central to the dressing room hierarchy, steps in alongside Bernardo. The captain gets the nod. The Frenchman, most likely, gets the bench.
A glimpse, not the final picture
This does not lock in Mourinho’s long-term midfield hierarchy. The battle for those two spots is only just beginning, and once Tchouameni returns to full fitness, the debate will reignite with even more force.
For now, though, the shape is clear. Bernardo Silva as the deep-lying playmaker. Federico Valverde as the tireless partner and on-field leader. Tchouameni watching on, waiting for his chance to break up a pairing that could quickly become the heartbeat of Mourinho’s Real Madrid.
