Rice Returns to Training as James Faces Injury Concerns

Declan Rice eased a few nerves on Friday. Reece James did the opposite.

On a warm morning at England’s Kansas City base, Rice stepped back into full training, his left calf no longer wrapped in the strapping that had alarmed supporters after the bruising 0-0 draw with Ghana at Boston Stadium. The Arsenal midfielder moved freely, took part in the main session and, barring any late reaction, is expected to be available for Saturday night’s Group L meeting with Panama (22:00 BST).

James, though, was nowhere to be seen.

The Chelsea right-back, so central to Thomas Tuchel’s plans, is nursing a hamstring issue picked up in that same goalless stalemate. While his team-mates went through their paces before flying to New York, James stayed indoors on an individual programme, working away from the cameras and away from the ball.

For a player who gives this England side balance, bite and delivery down the right, his absence is a serious concern. Tuchel will not say it out loud yet, but the question is already hanging over the camp: is this a short interruption or the start of a longer tournament problem?

He does at least have options. Jarell Quansah, Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa are the alternative right-back choices on the plane, each offering something different, none yet carrying James’s authority in the role. Any of the three could be asked to step in against Panama if the medical team advises caution.

The contrast with Rice’s situation is stark. The 25-year-old left the Ghana game with that calf heavily strapped and sat out Thursday’s session as a precaution. Inside the camp, the feeling was always that rest would be enough, and Friday’s return backed that up.

That does not automatically guarantee a starting place.

Rice is walking a disciplinary tightrope after his booking against Ghana left him one yellow card away from suspension for the round of 32. Tuchel must decide whether to risk his midfield anchor in a match that could seal top spot in Group L, or rotate and trust the depth of his squad with the knockouts looming.

Complicating that calculation is the status of Rice’s usual partner, Elliot Anderson. The midfielder, who is on the brink of a £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City, also missed Thursday’s session but reappeared on Friday, easing fears of a second midfield headache for the head coach.

With Anderson back alongside Rice in training, Tuchel at least has his preferred engine room available on the eve of a game that can shape England’s route through the tournament. Beat Panama and they lock in first place in the group, giving themselves a clearer line of sight through the knockout bracket.

So the picture is mixed. The spine of Rice and Anderson looks intact again. The right flank, usually patrolled by James with such authority, is under review.

For England, the stakes are simple enough: one win to take control of Group L. The more complex call lies with Tuchel, weighing fitness, form and suspension risks. Does he roll with his stars now and bank the group, or hold something back with the rounds that really define a campaign just around the corner?
