Roma vs Inter: Scudetto Clash at Stadio Olimpico
The Stadio Olimpico gets its first heavyweight night of the Serie A season on Saturday. Roma against Inter. Two perfect records, one champion, one challenger, and a fixture that has been brutally one-sided in recent years.
Inter, the reigning Scudetto holders, have won their last five league trips to Roma. Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma, though, look nothing like the soft touch of old. They come into Round 5 level with Inter on 12 points and top on goal difference. This is where we find out if their start is a springboard or a mirage.
Roma have done their job so far. A 2-1 win over Atalanta at the Olimpico, then a composed 2-0 victory at Torino on Monday. Useful results, tidy performances, but not statements. Their 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahçe in the Champions League – Bryan Cristante on the scoresheet – added a layer of resilience to the picture, but the cost is clear: Evan Ndicka is unavailable, while Manu Koné is still a doubt. Wesley, at least, has shaken off the knock he took in Istanbul.
Across the touchline, Cristian Chivu has made a flawless start in Serie A. Four league games, four wins. Inter have already gone to war with a direct rival, edging Napoli 3-2, and then shredded Udinese 5-3 at San Siro on Monday in a wild contest where they somehow trailed 2-0 inside 16 minutes. It was their second straight home game where they climbed back from two goals down. This team bends but doesn’t break.
Their European week told a different story. Inter slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid in the Champions League, a reminder that they’re not untouchable. Hakan Çalhanoğlu missed out entirely with injury, while John Stones limped off and now faces a late fitness test before the trip to Rome.
Lineups and the tactical chessboard
Roma are expected to line up with Mile Svilar in goal behind a back three of Gianluca Mancini, Leonardo Balerdi and Mario Hermoso. Lulli and Wesley should patrol the flanks, Cristante and Pisilli anchoring midfield. Ahead of them, Matías Soulé and Paulo Dybala support Donyell Malen, who has quickly become central to Gasperini’s attacking plans.
Inter should respond with J. Martínez between the posts, a defensive trio of Manuel Akanji, Stones (if passed fit) and Alessandro Bastoni. Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Augusto offer width, with Nicolò Barella, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Piotr Zieliński in the engine room. Up front, the familiar menace: Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez.
Roma’s problem is history. They have lost nine of their last 11 meetings with Inter, and Gasperini’s personal record against the Nerazzurri is one of the worst marks on his CV – just five wins in 32 attempts. That weight sits over this fixture like a cloud.
Strip out the draw, though, and the picture sharpens. Inter on a Draw No Bet line leans into their resilience and their habit of finding a way in tight games. At an implied probability of 54.1%, the market is effectively saying Inter are more likely to edge it than not. On current form, that feels about right.
Lautaro, rested and ready
Chivu made one thing clear against Udinese: this week was built around Roma. Lautaro Martínez started on the bench on Monday, kept fresh for the bigger stage of the Olimpico. Expect him to walk back into the XI with purpose.
The numbers say a goal is coming. Two goals from 3.1 expected goals in the league so far – not a slump, just a small backlog. Before that, he hit a decisive brace in the 3-2 comeback against Napoli. Last season, he delivered 17 league goals and 22 in all competitions. This is not a striker you leave quiet for long.
Now factor in Roma’s weakened back three without Ndicka. Gasperini’s high-risk, high-line approach against Inter’s captain, who thrives on timing and movement, feels like a powder keg. At an implied 41.7% chance to score, Lautaro to find the net looks generous rather than optimistic.
Thuram’s shooting gallery
If Lautaro is the finisher, Marcus Thuram is the constant threat. His early-season output has been relentless: 7.7 shots per 90 minutes, with 2.6 of those on target. Those are centrepiece striker numbers, not someone merely feeding off scraps.
That’s why three attempts on goal feels like a low bar. With an implied probability of 56.5%, the line underestimates how involved Thuram has been in Inter’s attacking patterns. He scored against Udinese, then again in the comeback win over Napoli, and started alongside Lautaro at the Bernabéu. That partnership should be restored in Rome after the rotation against Udinese.
Inter have scored in every game this season. The only real risk for a Thuram shots bet is an early substitution in a high-intensity away match, but his current form makes him hard to drag off unless the game is already settled.
Prediction: a narrow Inter edge
Roma have energy, momentum and a full Olimpico behind them. Inter have the scars, the experience and a recent habit of surviving storms and then punishing opponents when the gaps appear.
With both sides perfect in the league, something has to give. The call is Roma 1-2 Inter, with Malen striking for the hosts and Lautaro and Thuram tilting the title narrative back towards the champions.
If Roma are serious about the Scudetto, this is the night to prove it. If Inter walk out with another win, it might be the night everyone else realises they’re still the team to beat.
