Ronan Curtis Overcomes Knee Injury for Strong Start at Plymouth Argyle

Ronan Curtis insists the knee that troubled him last season is no longer holding him back – and his start to the new campaign for Plymouth Argyle backs that up.

The 30-year-old winger, who made his move from Port Vale permanent in January, went under the knife in the summer after playing through a meniscus tear for much of last year. He still managed two goals in 23 appearances in all competitions, but every game came with a cost.

Now he says that burden has gone.

“The knee’s good,” he told BBC South West, a simple verdict after a complicated year of managing pain, swelling and medication just to get on the pitch.

Curtis picked up the slight tear in pre-season last year and chose to grit his teeth through it, helping Argyle as they navigated the run-in. The joint would flare up, the swelling would come, and tablets became part of his matchday routine. The decision was clear once the season ended: fix it properly or risk it dragging on.

He chose the operation. Argyle are already seeing the benefit.

Curtis has started all five of the Pilgrims’ League One fixtures so far, as they opened the campaign with two wins and two defeats. No easing back, no cautious minutes from the bench. Straight into the side, straight into the tempo.

“I managed to get it done this season, get the surgery and back to my fully fit best now,” he said. “I have all faith in myself to come back stronger, fitter and much better.”

That self-belief runs through every word. The winger talks about the summer surgery not as a setback, but as a reset – something that “needed to get done” after months of firefighting the problem.

Now, he says, the swelling has gone, the pain has gone, the pills have gone.

“I’m all fit and healthy now.”

For Argyle, a fully firing Curtis on the left flank changes the picture of their season. For Curtis, it feels like the real start of his Plymouth career.
