Ruben Amorim and Manchester United: an unfinished story is about to get a new chapter, far from Old Trafford and Elland Road, on a neutral patch of Polish turf.

Seven months after their stormy split, the former United head coach and his old club collide again as Amorim’s AC Milan face Michael Carrick’s side in United’s final pre-season outing. Kick-off is set for Saturday at 15:45 UK time, but the subtext will start long before the whistle.

Carrick’s last dress rehearsal

For Carrick, this is more than a friendly. It’s the last serious examination before United head to Hull on the opening day of the season, and his best available XI will get one more run together.

Senne Lammens is expected to keep his place in goal. In front of him, Harry Maguire returns to anchor the defence, a role he reclaimed under Amorim and has since solidified under Carrick.

With Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt still sidelined, Carrick has a straight choice between Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven as Maguire’s partner. Heaven, the homegrown option, holds a slight edge to start. On the right, Diogo Dalot is tipped to win his renewed duel with Noussair Mazraoui, while Luke Shaw remains virtually unchallenged at left-back.

Mason Mount’s continued absence opens the door for the new faces in midfield. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are set to operate as the double pivot, with Bruno Fernandes pushed into his natural role as the creative hub just ahead of them.

Up front, United are still without Benjamin Šeško, so Bryan Mbeumo should again lead the line. That allows Amad Diallo to come in off the right, with Matheus Cunha expected to take over from Patrick Dorgu on the left.

It’s a side that blends old loyalties to Amorim with players who blossomed only after he left.

Old allies, fresh tension

When Amorim studies that likely United lineup, he will see familiar faces and familiar stories.

Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, his compatriots, were among those who responded to his methods. Maguire’s career at United, left adrift before Amorim’s arrival, found a second wind under the Portuguese coach, who trusted him when others hesitated.

Amorim also always rated Amad. The Ivorian enjoyed his best spell in a United shirt during the Portuguese’s tenure, and his resurgence under Amorim did not go unnoticed in Italy, where some outlets have already linked him with a future move to Milan.

Not every reunion will be warm.

On Carrick’s bench, several players will remember January very differently. Marcus Rashford most of all. The England international, once the face of United’s attack, saw his status crumble under Amorim to the point where his departure from his boyhood club looked inevitable.

Now, fate has circled back. Rashford could make his first United appearance in more than 18 months against the coach who, more than anyone, pushed him to the margins.

Kobbie Mainoo’s story runs along similar lines. Under Amorim at Carrington, he was reduced to a bit-part role, a promising youngster parked on the bench. Under Carrick, he exploded, becoming a central figure in United’s midfield and a symbol of the club’s new direction.

Then there is Harry Amass. His relationship with Amorim frayed when the coach used him and Chido Obi as examples of struggling academy products. The criticism did not land quietly. Both youngsters appeared to respond with pointed social media posts, quickly deleted but not forgotten.

Those fault lines have not vanished. They simply moved from Carrington to a Polish stadium.

So when United and Milan line up on Saturday, it will look like a standard pre-season fixture. It isn’t. It’s Carrick’s final audition, Amorim’s first brush with his old squad since that chaotic Elland Road press conference, and a live test of how far United have travelled since they cut the cord.

Friendly or not, the scoreline will say one thing. The body language between the protagonists might say far more about where this season is heading.
