Sage Fury After Four-Goal Defeat

Crystal Palace head coach Sage cut a furious figure after a damaging four-goal league defeat, admitting his own second-half changes helped drag his side’s performance off a cliff.

Chasing a route back into the game, Sage turned to his bench and sent on Dwight McNeil, Zavier Gozo and Evann Guessand in the second half. Instead of lifting Palace, the triple change drained the side of intensity and coherence, and the contest quickly ran away from them.

“I think we were able to play 60 minutes, stayed in the game,” he said. “When I made the substitutions, the energy of the team went down. I'm a bit angry with that.

“Both [at my team and myself], we are together. I'm with my team every moment. We had a lot of chances, it's difficult to have hope against this kind of team without scoring. When you change players, you need more energy, I didn't find that.”

The collapse carried an unwelcome statistical sting. It was only the second time a side managed by Sage has shipped four goals in a league match, the other coming in Lyon’s 4-1 defeat to PSG in April 2024. For a coach who prides himself on structure and resilience, that matters.

Sage pointed to fitness shortfalls and a disjointed pre-season as key factors, but his message was clear: standards cannot slip.

“We know we are in a process, we know we have to work. We have to not accept this kind of situation, we deserved a better result,” he said. “Two negative situations at the end. We were late in our preseasons. I think at the moment we need substitutions. You can't replace fatigue with low energy.”

The pressure now shifts off the pitch as much as on it. Palace must scramble through the final days of the transfer window before Tuesday’s deadline, with squad depth exposed and reinforcements no longer a luxury but a necessity.

Sage, still searching for his first points of the campaign, takes his side across the capital to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on September 5 in a London derby that already feels loaded. A positive result there is not just about the table; it is about belief.

With the international break looming straight after, Palace cannot afford to spend two weeks stewing on another setback.
