Santos Overcome Adversity with Neymar and Gabigol in Sudamericana Victory

Santos were rocked early, lost two players before the break, saw VAR cut them down twice, and still walked off the Vila Belmiro pitch with a 2-1 lead and their season very much alive.

On a tense Thursday night, with the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 on the line, Gabigol and Willian Arão turned a troubled first leg against Macará into a comeback that felt bigger than the scoreline.

It was only Santos’ third win in 14 games this year with Neymar and Gabigol starting together. This time, the stars refused to let it slip.

Shock start, early injuries and a nervy Vila

Even that came with a scare: Neymar slipped again and felt pain around his left knee. He stayed on, but every time he went to ground, the stadium held its breath.

So Santos travel to Estadio Bellavista next Thursday (20) with a narrow edge and a clear equation: a draw is enough to reach the quarterfinals.

Macará must win by at least two goals to go through in regular time. A one-goal victory for the Ecuadorian side sends the tie to penalties.

Waiting on the other side of the bracket are Atlético or Red Bull Bragantino. Galo carry a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Bragança.

Before any of that, Peixe dive back into the Brasileirão fight. They sit as the team opening the relegation zone and now head to São Januário on Sunday (16) to face 18th-placed Vasco in a match that feels as decisive as any knockout tie.

Neymar and Gabigol delivered when it mattered in the Sudamericana. The question now is whether this hard-fought win can spark a run that saves Santos’ season on all fronts.
