Saudi Arabia Squad Announcement for Gulf 27

Georgios Donis is about to show his hand.

The Greek head coach of Saudi Arabia will announce his final squad for the Arabian Gulf Cup – Gulf 27 – on Wednesday, according to Saudi channel Al-Ekhbariya, just a week before the tournament kicks off in Jeddah.

Gulf 27 opens on 23 September and runs through to 6 October, with the “Green Falcons” hosting the region’s showpiece and chasing a title that has eluded them for 23 years. Their last triumph dates back to 2003, a drought that hangs over every new generation that pulls on the shirt.

This time, Donis must do it without his biggest star.

Captain Salem Al-Dawsari has been ruled out of the tournament through injury, stripping Saudi Arabia of their most influential attacking figure and emotional leader. To make matters worse, right-back Saud Abdulhamid is also a doubt and may miss the competition, leaving the coach to rework both his leadership core and his defensive structure just days before naming his list.

The timing adds weight to Wednesday’s announcement. Every name – and every omission – will be dissected, not least because the path to the latter stages offers no margin for error.

Saudi Arabia have been drawn in Group One alongside Iraq, Oman and Kuwait, a classic Gulf Cup mix of rivalry and risk. Only the top two teams will progress to the semi-finals, turning each group match into a high-stakes examination of Donis’ choices.
