Scott McTominay to Undergo Heart Procedure After Arrhythmia Diagnosis

Napoli have confirmed that Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay will undergo a minor heart procedure after the discovery of what the club described as "a mild benign arrhythmia".

The 29-year-old was withdrawn after 56 minutes of Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat away to Como on Sunday. Initial concern over the substitution has now been followed by clarity from the club, who say the issue has been identified and will be corrected "in the coming days".

Napoli expect McTominay to be available again after the international break in early October, a timeline that suggests the club are confident about both the nature of the condition and the success of the procedure.

McTominay himself moved quickly to reassure supporters, posting on Instagram: "See you soon Napoli. I won't take long." A short message, but a clear indication of his determination to return swiftly.

The diagnosis is a blow for new Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli. The timing means McTominay is likely to miss Pocognoli’s first four matches in charge: a home-and-away double-header against Slovenia, followed by Nations League fixtures against North Macedonia and Switzerland.

For Scotland, it removes an experienced midfield presence at the very moment a new era begins. For Napoli, it briefly interrupts the integration of a key player in the early weeks of the season.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia is a problem with the heart’s rhythm, when it beats too quickly, too slowly, or irregularly. In McTominay’s case, Napoli have stressed that the issue is mild and benign, and that the procedure is corrective.
