Scott McTominay's Heart Surgery Success and Recovery Update

Napoli have confirmed that Scott McTominay’s heart surgery “was a complete success” and expect the Scotland midfielder back in training before the end of the month.

The 29-year-old underwent an ablation procedure on Tuesday morning at Spire Manchester Hospital, a minimally invasive operation used to correct irregular heart rhythms.

McTominay’s issue came to light after he was substituted 56 minutes into Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on 30 August. Tests revealed a mild benign arrhythmia, and the club moved quickly to arrange corrective treatment.

The pressure of uncertainty eased with Napoli’s update. In a statement, the club said McTominay will rest for two weeks before returning to training, keeping alive their initial hope that the former Manchester United midfielder could be back in action shortly after the international break in early October.

McTominay himself struck an upbeat tone when the problem was first made public, posting on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

His recovery will be watched closely in Scotland as well as in Naples. Sebastien Pocognoli’s first four matches as Scotland head coach – home and away against Slovenia, plus Nations League fixtures with North Macedonia and Switzerland – are scheduled for late September and early October.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm. For McTominay, the hope now is simple: a steady heartbeat, a clean bill of health, and a swift return to the centre of midfield.
