Spain’s Nations League: Barcelona's Core and Striker Debate

The picture in Luis de la Fuente’s midfield looks almost settled. The only likely tweak is the return of Fermin Lopez, who is expected to step in for Gavi. The Barcelona midfielder will miss the opening game at Wembley through suspension and, to complicate matters, has also lost his starting place at club level after the injury he suffered at the start of La Liga against Elche.

De la Fuente still holds Gavi in very high regard. That much is clear. So while he sits out the first night in London, his longer-term place in the coach’s plans is anything but dead. You don’t simply cross out a player he trusts that much.

Striker Debate

Up front, the debate is sharper. One seat is empty compared with the World Cup-winning squad: the third striker. Mikel Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres are locked in. Their tickets are stamped. The doubt surrounds the role previously filled by Borja Iglesias, who began the season with a soleus problem and has barely featured since. His lack of minutes has opened a door.

And the youngsters are rushing towards it. Sergio Camello, Roberto, Espi and Gonzalo are all in the frame, all pushing to be the name that completes the attacking unit. One of them could see his career change with a single phone call.

Squad Size and Rotation

Squad size adds another layer. Only 23 players can be registered for the UEFA Nations League group stage, down from the 26 allowed in the final rounds. The margin for error shrinks. Even so, the calendar is brutal: four matches in a short window. Rotation will not be a luxury; it will be a necessity. Expect De la Fuente to widen his working group, even if the official list must stay tight.

Barcelona's Influence

At club level, Barcelona’s influence is set to be overwhelming. The Catalan side will again provide the backbone of the national team. Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Rodri and Lamine Yamal are all considered certainties for the squad. That is already a heavy Blaugrana imprint.

It might not stop there. Gavi and Fermin Lopez could both be included once suspension and form are balanced out, while Xavi Espart is also in contention. In the most generous scenario for the Camp Nou, Spain could travel with 10 Barcelona players. A national team wearing a distinctly club-coloured tint.

Upcoming Matches

The schedule offers no gentle introduction. Spain open their UEFA Nations League campaign against England at Wembley on 26 September, a high-voltage start in London. Three days later, Croatia arrive in Seville on the 29th, a test of depth and recovery. Then comes a trip to Oviedo to face the Czech Republic on 3 October, before the window closes with another clash against Croatia, this time in Split on the 6th.

By then, we will know if De la Fuente’s faith in his Barcelona core and his gamble on that third striker can carry Spain through a punishing Nations League launch.
