TCU Falls to Texas 1-0 Despite Geller's Heroics

FORT WORTH – On a night built for a statement, TCU’s defense held firm, the crowd roared, and still it wasn’t enough. One clean strike from Texas decided it.

No. 19 TCU fell 1-0 to the Longhorns on Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, undone by a 68th-minute finish from Ava McDonald despite a standout performance from goalkeeper Olivia Geller.

Geller stands tall, but Texas break through

For nearly 70 minutes, Geller kept TCU in it. The Horned Frogs (3-2-1) leaned heavily on their keeper, who produced eight saves across the 90 minutes and repeatedly turned away Texas pressure to keep the match level.

TCU carved out a few promising moments in the first half, most notably when Grace Vest forced a save with a shot on goal. The build-up play flickered, the ideas were there, but the final ball kept letting them down. They reached halftime with the score still 0-0 and the sense that the game was there to be taken.

After the break, TCU tried to push higher and managed five shots in the second half, but Texas carried the sharper edge in front of goal. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute, when McDonald found space and drilled home what proved to be the winner, giving the Longhorns a 1-0 lead that silenced the home crowd.

Inches from an equalizer

The drama refused to fade quietly. With five minutes left, it looked like TCU had found their moment.

Kamdyn Fuller rose to meet a cross and powered a header toward goal. A Texas defender’s attempt to clear almost backfired, nearly knocking the ball over the line. Instead, it somehow stayed out, agonizingly close but not close enough. That was TCU’s best chance, and it slipped away by inches.

The Horned Frogs kept pressing in the final minutes, but the equalizer never came. Texas saw out the closing stages and walked away with the 1-0 win.

Milestone night, record crowd

The loss came on a significant night for the program. Head coach Eric Bell took charge of his 300th match at TCU, a landmark moment framed by one of the largest home crowds in recent memory.

Attendance hit 2,326, the biggest at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium since October 27, 2022, when 2,539 fans turned out for a matchup with Texas Tech. The energy matched the numbers, with the stands driving TCU forward as they chased the game late.

Geller’s eight saves set a new season high and left her just one shy of her career best. She was one of six Frogs to go the distance, joined by Zoe Cuneio, Grace Coppinger, Evie Baker, Cameron Patton and Fuller, all logging the full 90 minutes.

Off the bench, Eric Bell turned to Eres Freifeld, Hannah Harms, Madison Taylor, Mackenzie Hilderman and Giovanna Costanzo to inject fresh legs and ideas. In attack, Bella Diorio led TCU with two shots, both on target, but the Texas back line and keeper held firm.

Big 12 test on the horizon

Now comes a pause and a reset.

TCU get an 11-day break before opening Big 12 play on September 17 on the road at Oklahoma State in Stillwater. After a night where effort and atmosphere met a ruthless opponent and a cruel bounce, the question is simple: how quickly can the Frogs turn frustration into fuel for the conference grind ahead?
