Tottenham's Lineup Changes: De Zerbi's Strategic Moves Against Newcastle
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi was forced into a late reshuffle as his side went hunting for their first league win of the season against Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs walked out still bruised from a 3-0 opening-day defeat to Brentford, a result that stripped away much of the early-season optimism and cranked up the pressure on De Zerbi. The mood had lifted slightly in midweek, when new signing Savio lit up the Carabao Cup with a stunning debut goal in a 5-1 demolition of Charlton Athletic. One touch, one curling finish, and the Brazilian instantly felt like the new darling of the home crowd.
Which is why his absence from the squad against Newcastle jarred so sharply.
Savio had been talked up by De Zerbi before the game, the head coach openly suggesting the winger was in the frame to make his full Premier League debut. Instead, his name was nowhere to be seen on the teamsheet. Confusion in the stands, a flurry of questions in the press room.
De Zerbi moved quickly to shut down any speculation. Speaking to Sky Sports, he revealed the blow that landed on the eve of the match. “There was bad news yesterday, before training in the afternoon. He suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff didn’t want to take a risk. I agree with them,” the Italian said.
No gamble, no Savio. Spurs will hope the caution pays off with the Brazilian ready for next weekend’s trip to Nottingham Forest, a fixture that already feels important for their early-season narrative.
If one new signing was ruled out, another stepped straight into the spotlight. Omar Marmoush, brought in from Manchester City on an initial loan with a £60million obligation to buy, was handed a start and a full debut. Thrown in from the first whistle, the forward carried the task of injecting urgency and threat into a side still trying to rediscover its edge.
The surprises did not stop there. Richarlison, whose future at the club has been under scrutiny all window, was also missing from the bench. No role even among the substitutes, and no immediate clarity on his situation, only more intrigue around a forward line in flux.
There was at least one shaft of light for De Zerbi. Mohammed Kudus, sidelined since January with a stubborn thigh problem, finally returned to the fold and made the bench after coming through fitness checks. For a manager juggling absences and form, simply seeing Kudus back in the matchday squad felt like a small but significant step.
Spurs went into the afternoon with questions swirling around selection, fitness and futures. The answers will come not in the treatment room or the transfer market, but in how this reshaped attack responds on the pitch in the weeks ahead.
