Villarreal vs Real Betis: A Clash of Confidence and Urgency

Real Betis head to Estadio de la Ceramica on Monday chasing a third straight win in all competitions. Villarreal, under new boss Inigo Perez, are still chasing something far more basic: a first victory of the season.

Perez under early strain

Perez arrived with a glow. His work at Rayo Vallecano – eighth in La Liga in 2024-25 and a run all the way to the Conference League final – gave Villarreal fans reason to believe they were getting one of Spain’s sharpest emerging coaches.

The reality has hit harder.

Five games into his Villarreal reign, he is still waiting for a win. The campaign opened with a pair of 2-2 draws against Racing Santander and Atletico Madrid, hints of attacking promise undermined by defensive looseness. That looseness was punished, brutally at times, in back-to-back league defeats to Alaves and Deportivo La Coruna.

Europe offered no respite. In his first Champions League match as a head coach, Perez watched his side fight, score twice away to Borussia Dortmund – through a Santiago Mourino header and a stoppage-time own goal – and still lose 3-2. Goals, but no control. Effort, but no reward.

Now comes a pivotal week. Betis at home, then Malaga and Levante, all crammed in before a three-week international break that will either buy Perez breathing space or crank up the pressure.

History gives him one small comfort. In five previous meetings with Betis as a manager, he has never lost (one win, four draws). It is not much, but right now, he cannot ignore any positive omen.

Betis arrive in full flow

If Villarreal are searching for a spark, Betis travel with the engine already roaring.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have taken four wins from their first five competitive games of the 2026-27 season, including a statement 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in their last La Liga outing. That was followed by something even more emotionally charged: a 3-2 away win at Lille in their first Champions League group-stage appearance since 2005-06.

In France, Betis had to scrap. They fell behind twice, only to be dragged back into the contest by Marc Bartra, of all people, the centre-back scoring a brace. Each time Lille thought they had the momentum, Bartra snatched it away. Then Troy Parrott, the match-winner against Real Madrid, stepped up again, marking his Champions League debut with the decisive goal.

Those results have pushed Betis up to fifth in La Liga, just three points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. The table is still young, but the message is clear: Betis are not easing their way into the season. They are sprinting.

Recent history at La Ceramica also leans their way. Betis took four points from Villarreal last term, including a chaotic draw in this fixture when Antony struck twice to haul them back from 2-0 down. That comeback extended Betis’s unbeaten run in league visits to Villarreal to four matches (two wins, two draws) since a 2-0 defeat in October 2021.

They know this ground. They know they can hurt this team.

Team news and likely XIs

Villarreal’s selection picture is not ideal. Carlos Romero is expected to miss out, while Juan Foyth, absent from the last two matches through injury, is again unlikely to feature.

One notable change comes in goal. Peter Gulacsi is set for his La Liga debut after being preferred to Luiz Junior in the narrow defeat to Borussia Dortmund. His experience may be exactly what Perez needs behind a defence still searching for stability.

The schedule almost forces rotation. Alex Freeman, Nicolas Pepe, Alberto Moleiro, Ayoze Perez and Gerard Moreno are all pushing to start as Perez looks to inject freshness and a bit more edge into his attack.

For Betis, the absentee list is shorter but still significant. Aitor Ruibal remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from the knee injury that ended his previous campaign.

There is better news elsewhere. Abde Ezzalzouli and Diego Llorente should both be available, with Llorente expected to wear a protective mask after breaking his nose in that bruising win over Real Madrid. Brazilian winger Antony is tipped to shake off illness in time to take up his usual role on the right flank.

On paper, this looks like a clash of moods: Villarreal fragile and searching, Betis confident and ruthless. Yet Perez’s record against Los Verdiblancos, and Betis’s willingness to trade punches away from home, hint at a more balanced contest than the form guide suggests.

Betis have the tools to punish Villarreal’s defensive lapses. Villarreal, backed into a corner, have the urgency of a team that knows it cannot drift into the break winless.

The pressure finally has to tell somewhere. The feeling, though, is that it may not be enough to break Perez’s curious streak against Betis.
