Wrexham Draw with Burnley: Phil Parkinson Reflects on Performance

Phil Parkinson admitted Wrexham are still short of their best after being forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to bottom‑of‑the‑table Burnley.

The Red Dragons had to claw their way back from behind, Jacques Ekomie’s second-half header salvaging a point at the Racecourse and stretching their unbeaten run to three matches. The wait for a first home league win of the season, though, goes on.

Wrexham arrived in confident mood after a 3-0 dismantling of Millwall and a disciplined 0-0 at Swansea, but Parkinson was blunt about the drop-off without the ball.

“There are things we can do better,” he said, reflecting on a performance that never quite hit the control Wrexham showed in their previous two outings.

He felt Burnley’s tweaks unsettled his side.

Without possession, Wrexham struggled to get to grips with the visitors’ shape and tempo. Parkinson conceded his team “didn’t get it quite right” tactically and were “a bit passive” in their pressing as Burnley found too many pockets of space.

That stood in stark contrast to the Millwall and Swansea games, where Wrexham restricted both opponents to “hardly a shot on goal”. This time, the manager saw his side sit too deep, too often.

“Against Burnley there was just a bit too much space in areas and we need to look at that,” he said. “We got caught 10 to 15 yards too deep at times.”

The response came in the dressing room. Parkinson adjusted the approach at the interval, pushing his side higher and demanding a more aggressive press. The difference, he felt, was immediate.

“At half-time we rectified that and the pressing was loads better,” he said.

Ekomie’s header ensured Wrexham’s resilience again showed on the scoreboard. Parkinson, though, left the night with a different concern: not the character of his side, but how quickly they can turn these lessons into the first home win the Racecourse is waiting for.
