Xabi Alonso's Chelsea XI Decisions for Brentford Match

Xabi Alonso will wait until the last possible moment on Friday before nailing down his Chelsea XI for Brentford, with several key names still being pushed through late fitness checks.

Midfielder Moises Caicedo is edging closer to a return and is said to be improving quickly, but Alonso refused to promise the Ecuadorian a place in the squad until he has come through the final round of physical tests on Friday morning. Captain Reece James also remains under careful monitoring as he continues his recovery programme.

For now, nobody has been officially ruled out.

"In terms of injuries, no one is ruled out for Friday so I prefer to be cautious," Alonso said. "Moises Caicedo is getting closer to fitness. We will see Reece James' development before deciding."

Brazil forward Joao Pedro is another who could come into contention, though questions remain over his international availability. Alonso brushed those aside, making it clear that Chelsea’s trip to Brentford comes first and any national-team decisions can wait.

The Spaniard has spent the build-up drilling his players on what awaits at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brentford’s reputation for set-pieces and lightning counter-attacks is well established, but Alonso made a point of stressing that Thomas Frank’s side bring far more to the table than dead balls and breaks.

"They do set-pieces and fast transitions very well, but they are a complete team with or without the ball," he noted. "They have great strength playing at home, so it is going to be a big challenge."

Alonso has gone back over footage from last season’s meeting, using it as a warning as much as a guide. He wants full concentration from the first whistle, knowing that any lapse against Brentford’s direct style can be punished ruthlessly.

In a league he describes as offering “zero margin for error”, the message to his squad is blunt: switch off, and Brentford will find you. Stay sharp, and Chelsea can use this fixture as a springboard before the dressing room empties for international duty.
