Xabi Alonso's Premier League Debut: Chelsea vs Fulham

Xabi Alonso steps into the Premier League spotlight on Monday night with the kind of assignment Chelsea managers learn to live or die by: a short trip across west London, and a long battle for bragging rights.

His first league game in charge takes him to Craven Cottage, where another familiar face begins his own English top-flight story. Alvaro Arbeloa, a former teammate and long-time ally from their Real Madrid days, stands in the opposite dugout as Fulham launch into the post-Marco Silva era.

Alonso’s Chelsea reboot

Arbeloa’s Fulham reset

Across the way, Fulham enter a new chapter of their own. Marco Silva’s departure leaves a sizeable void after he dragged the club into stable Premier League territory and beyond. Arbeloa now inherits that platform and tries to push it higher.

He has leaned into what he knows. Fulham’s recruitment has been shaped by his Real Madrid connections, with ex-Real pair Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios both in the frame for their first Premier League appearances. If they start, Craven Cottage will get an early look at how Arbeloa wants his team to evolve: technical, brave on the ball, and willing to mix it with one of the division’s heavy spenders.

The squad is close to full strength. Tom Cairney is sidelined with a knee injury, denying Fulham their captain’s guile in midfield. Joachim Andersen misses out as well, completing the final game of a three-match suspension after his sending-off against Bournemouth in May.

Even without them, the core looks solid. Bernd Leno anchors a side that still carries plenty of energy and running, with the predicted XI reading:

One touchline holds a manager tasked with dragging Chelsea back among the elite. The other belongs to a coach trying to prove Fulham can grow, not shrink, in the shadow of a successful predecessor.

Only one of Alonso or Arbeloa will walk away from their Premier League debut with the city talking about them for the right reasons.
