Xabi Alonso Rules Out Moises Caicedo for Chelsea vs Leeds

Xabi Alonso has ruled Moises Caicedo out of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds on Tuesday night, insisting he will not gamble again on the midfielder’s fitness.

Caicedo, who missed the opening two league games against Fulham and Luton, returned as a substitute in the chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton. His comeback lasted just 14 minutes. The Ecuador captain was forced off with injury, a sharp setback for both player and manager.

He then sat out Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, a game after which Alonso admitted Chelsea may have rushed him back too quickly.

The head coach was blunt post-match at the Emirates, conceding he did not want to repeat that error with such a key figure and promising not to make the “same mistake again”.

On Tuesday afternoon, speaking ahead of the Leeds clash at Stamford Bridge, Alonso delivered the update Chelsea fans were dreading.

Asked directly if Caicedo was fit, he replied: “No. Not yet. Still not ready to go. Not the moment to take a too-early risk. We go game by game with them. It’s too early.”

The message was clear: no shortcuts this time.

There is, though, a sliver of optimism. When pressed on whether Caicedo could be involved against Hull, Alonso allowed: “Potentially, yes. But we need to wait and probably Thursday or Friday we will know more.”

So Leeds comes too soon, Hull remains a possibility, and Chelsea tread carefully with one of their most important players.

There was better news elsewhere in the squad. Alonso confirmed Levi Colwill is ready to return, a welcome boost to a defence that has already been shuffled early in the season. But Marco Palestra is still sidelined.

“Especially for (Palestra). He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the PL,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

Chelsea will also be without Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha for the cup tie, tightening options as Alonso looks to rotate without weakening his side.

Leeds arrive with far fewer concerns. They boast almost a clean bill of health, with only Daniel James facing a late fitness test as he tries to shake off lingering back and hamstring problems.

Chelsea, then, go into a knockout tie with key absentees and a manager who has already been burned once by pushing too hard, too soon. The temptation to rush Caicedo back again will be there when Hull comes around.

Alonso has already given his answer.
