Borussia Mönchengladbach Signs Daiki Hashioka on Loan

Borussia Mönchengladbach are moving quickly to plug a hole they thought was already filled.

Barely weeks after Yukhym Konoplya arrived to lock down the right side of defence, the Ukrainian has been sidelined, and Gladbach have turned to Japan. Sky Germany, via transfermarkt.de, reports that the club have reached an agreement with Slavia Prague to bring in Daiki Hashioka on loan with an option to buy. The 27-year-old is expected to complete his medical on Thursday.

If all goes through, Hashioka will be the club’s eighth signing of the summer and the second from Japan, following defensive midfielder Zento Uno. It’s not just a numbers move. It’s a response to a problem that arrived far too early in pre-season.

Konoplya’s setback came in what should have been a routine tune-up: a 2-1 friendly win over Rot-Weiss Essen. The right-back suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury serious enough to rule him out for around two months. He will miss all team sessions during the Tegernsee training camp, ripping up the coaching staff’s original plan for the new-look back line.

So Gladbach have gone for reliability and flexibility in one package. Hashioka, capped 12 times by Japan, spent last season on loan at KAA Gent, where he made 17 appearances. He is a right-back by trade, but can also slot into central defence or operate higher up the right flank. For a squad already juggling absences and new arrivals, that versatility is gold.

It also fits the broader theme of this Gladbach summer: controlled change, not chaos.

Uno eased into the fold

While one Japanese international edges closer to signing, another has just taken his first steps in green and white.

Zento Uno completed his first full team-training session on Tuesday. The 22-year-old was used mainly in drills with limited physical contact, a gentle start designed to build him up before the intensity spikes at the training camp. The club are clearly in no rush to overload a player they see as a long-term piece in midfield.

Communication, often overlooked in transfer chatter, is being treated as a priority. Gladbach have assigned interpreter Atsushi Waki to work closely with Uno during tactical meetings and on the training pitch. Head coach Eugen Polanski underlined why that matters, stressing that the staff want their messages to land “exactly” as intended and that this week is about easing Uno into the workload so he can ideally participate fully at the camp.

On the surface, it’s a minor detail. In reality, it’s the kind of measure that can shorten adaptation time and prevent misunderstandings in a system that demands precision.

Busy summer, more movement ahead

The pre-season schedule offers little breathing space. Before heading to Rottach-Egern, Gladbach will face Hansa Rostock. Once in Bavaria, they’ll meet local side FC Rottach-Egern and then test themselves against Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim. With so many new faces, these matches are less about results and more about fast-tracking cohesion.

Financially, the club have kept a tight grip on the balance sheet. Around €12.5 million has gone into new signings, while sales have generated roughly €21 million. The rebuild, then, is being funded with a clear eye on sustainability rather than a spending spree.

And the door is not closed on departures. Nathan Ngoumou, Tomas Cvancara and Florian Neuhaus are all mentioned as possible exits. Any one of them leaving would reshape the internal hierarchy and could trigger further moves.

For now, the immediate priority is clear: get Hashioka through the door, get Uno fully integrated, and keep the pre-season plan on track despite Konoplya’s untimely injury. Gladbach’s summer was always going to be about transition. The question now is whether this carefully calibrated reshuffle can carry them into the new campaign stronger than they finished the last.
