Carrick and Rooney Join United’s New Scholar Class
Old Trafford has seen title parades, European nights and farewell ovations. On Friday, it staged something quieter, but no less symbolic for Manchester United’s future: the annual celebration for the club’s new scholars.
Eight teenagers signed scholarship deals and formally stepped into the Professional Development Phase. Among them, two names that echo through United history – Jacey Carrick and Kai Rooney.
They posed together for a photograph on the pitch, two 16-year-olds in club tracksuits, carrying the weight and opportunity of their fathers’ legacies. Watching on, just a few yards away, were Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney – this time not as United greats, but as dads.
Michael, now United’s head coach, attended in a dual role: the man in charge of the first team and the father of a midfielder just starting out. Wayne, taking a rare night off from World Cup punditry, slipped back into familiar surroundings to see Kai take his next step in red.
For the sons, this is no nostalgia tour. It is the serious business of trying to become professionals.
Kai's Pathway
Kai, 16, has already had a taste of that pathway. Last season he made six appearances in the Under-18 Premier League and debuted in the FA Youth Cup, a competition steeped in United folklore. Those minutes are expected to be just the start. He is tipped to play a larger role for Darren Fletcher’s Under-18 side next season, with more responsibility and more scrutiny to match the surname on his shirt.
Jacey's Development
Jacey, also 16, is at an earlier stage in terms of game time. He made a single appearance in the Under-18 Premier League last term, but the club has moved to secure his development with scholarship forms that keep him in the system for the next phase of his progression. For a young midfielder, training daily in that environment is as important as any early appearance tally.
The scholarship contract is the bridge between promise and profession. It allows players to continue their education as footballers and marks the final step before a potential professional deal, which can be activated from a player’s 17th birthday. Many of United’s best prospects agree pro terms before that milestone, with the contract kicking in on the day they turn 17.
Carrick and Rooney were not alone on this particular night. The new scholar group also includes Gazik Ibragimov, Edson Dejonge-Seiros, Harlem McLaughlin, Pharell Silvester, Connor Laurie and Jaume Camacho – a mix of positions, backgrounds and stories, all converging on the same dressing room and the same dream.
One notable talent is not quite there yet. At 15, JJ Gabriel is too young to sign a scholarship, so his turn will come next year. United already know they may have a battle on their hands to keep the highly rated attacker when that moment arrives.
For now, the focus rests on this new intake. Eight teenagers, two iconic surnames, one club that has always sold the idea that the next generation is already walking through the door.
On Friday night at Old Trafford, they did exactly that.
