Diomande Dazzles While Rashford Waits on Future

Emerse Fae couldn’t quite hide the smile. Ivory Coast had just beaten Ecuador, Yan Diomande had run the game from the flank, and the questions were no longer about the result – they were about Liverpool.

“When we were in France, during the preparation, journalists told me he was about to sign with PSG. Here, they tell me he's about to sign with Liverpool!” Fae said, half amused, half exasperated.

That’s where Diomande is now. A winger coming off a stellar season at RB Leipzig, lighting up the international stage and suddenly finding Europe’s heavyweights circling. PSG in one ear, Liverpool in the other.

For the moment, Fae insists, the noise stays outside.

“I don't know, but for now, he will focus on the World Cup, and then afterwards, he can think about the rest of his career.”

What he does know is the player in front of him.

“Yan – what can I say? I can't put it into words. He's very talented, but beyond the talent, he's very young and he'll improve. He's a kid who works hard, has a real team spirit, laughs with everyone, and he listens, listens to the technical staff whenever he's given advice, and tries to do his best, as he's told.”

The admiration is clear. So is the sense that Diomande’s next move will not be a small one.

Rashford waiting on his future

While Diomande rides a wave, Marcus Rashford is stuck in limbo.

According to The Athletic, the forward remains “unclear” about what comes next, with no firm resolution over a return to Manchester United. His season on loan at Barcelona brought a change of scenery but not a permanent escape; the La Liga club have decided against turning the deal into a full transfer.

The situation is complicated by the terms of his contract. It is suggested there is a £40 million release clause in place, available to every club except Manchester City and Liverpool. A sizeable fee, but not an outrageous one in the current market for a player of his profile.

Rashford’s preference, it is claimed, is straightforward: stay at United rather than join another English side, if no serious offers arrive from the continent. He wants clarity. For now, he has uncertainty.

United’s midfield rebuild gathers pace

One area where Manchester United are not hesitating is midfield.

The club are expected to announce the signing of Ederson from Atalanta in due course, with a deal already agreed between the two sides. It is a key piece in what is shaping up to be a significant rebuild in the centre of the pitch, with United targeting several options to reshape the heart of their team.

Elliot Anderson had been monitored, but United have now stepped away from that pursuit. Attention has shifted to other profiles, including West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who remains on the shortlist. Relegation has put the Hammers in a weaker bargaining position, and United are eyeing what they hope will be a shrewd move at the right price.

Sandro Tonali also sits firmly on their radar. The Italian midfielder, currently enjoying a summer without World Cup commitments after Italy’s failure to qualify, is seen as a high-level option to anchor or energise a new-look United engine room.

Spurs join the race for Tonali

United, though, are not alone in that chase.

Tottenham have now entered the race for Tonali, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the north London club positioning him as a central figure in what is described as an ambitious new project. Spurs want a statement signing in midfield; Tonali fits the bill.

He is not short of admirers. Manchester City and Arsenal have also been linked, and Newcastle, his current club, are in no rush to let him leave cheaply. Missing out on European football last season has raised questions over sales, but the message around Tonali is clear: any deal will be expensive.

A price tag close to £100 million has been mooted. That kind of figure changes dressing rooms, transfer plans and expectations in an instant.

So Diomande dazzles on the international stage, Rashford waits for direction, United tear up and redraw their midfield, and Tonali sits at the centre of a tug-of-war among England’s elite.

The window has only just opened its jaws. Who blinks first?
