The fallout from Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain has moved from the pitch to the courtroom of football’s governing body, with Fifa confirming it has opened disciplinary proceedings against the beaten finalists.

The case centres on the chaotic scenes that followed Spain’s 1-0 victory in July at the New York New Jersey Stadium, where tempers boiled over at the final whistle. Multiple Argentina players and members of the backroom staff became embroiled in altercations with Spain’s players as frustration over the loss spilled into confrontation.

Fifa had already appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor last week to piece together exactly what happened in those tense post-match moments. On the back of that assessment, the world governing body has now escalated matters.

Key Individuals Under Scrutiny

Argentina defenders Nahuel Molina and midfielder Leandro Paredes face some of the most serious scrutiny. Molina has been cited for two alleged counts of assault under article 14 of Fifa’s disciplinary code, while Paredes faces three such counts. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also been charged with one alleged count of assault under the same article, bringing the coaching staff directly into the frame.

The list does not end there. Molina is also under investigation for an additional alleged act of unsporting behaviour, again under article 14. Team-mate Thiago Almada has been accused of the same breach, as has Spain midfielder Gavi, underlining that the disciplinary net stretches across both sides involved in the final.

Potential Consequences

Fifa’s code is clear on the potential consequences. Unsportsmanlike conduct carries a minimum suspension of one match. Assault raises the stakes considerably, bringing a minimum three-match ban for any player or official found guilty.
