Hervé Koffi Returns to Union Saint-Gilloise for Champions League Opportunity

Hervé Koffi is on the move again – and back to familiar territory with a new stage to conquer.

According to La DH, the RC Lens goalkeeper is set to join Union Saint-Gilloise on loan with an option to buy, a deal that would reunite him with Belgian football and open the door to Champions League nights.

It comes off the back of a standout season in France. On loan at SCO Angers last year, the 29-year-old Burkinabé produced a campaign that pushed him into the conversation as one of Ligue 1’s top goalkeepers. Week after week, he anchored Angers with commanding performances, establishing himself as a reference point in the division.

That resurgence has not translated into a clear path at Lens. Back in the north of France this summer, Koffi finds himself blocked by the rise of 21-year-old Robin Risser, whose emergence has complicated the hierarchy in goal. With minutes far from guaranteed, the window has opened for a strategic exit.

Belgium offers both comfort and challenge. Koffi knows the league, its tempo, and its demands. He first arrived there with Royal Excel Mouscron in 2020-21, then built a solid reputation during three seasons at Royal Charleroi SC from 2021 to 2024. Union Saint-Gilloise now want to tap into that experience. For the Brussels club, this is not just about depth. It is about finding a new anchor after the departure of Kjell Scherpen, who has joined newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town. Replacing a 26-year-old who earned a move to England is no small assignment; Koffi will be stepping straight into a high-pressure role.
