Inter Milan Tests Liverpool’s Resolve Over Curtis Jones

Inter Milan have moved to test Liverpool’s resolve over Curtis Jones, sounding out a deal just as the midfielder finds himself at the centre of an unexpected storm over the captain’s armband.

The Serie A champions have, according to James Horncastle of The Athletic, approached Liverpool via intermediaries and indicated a willingness to pay around €35m (£29.9m). Liverpool, for now, are understood to want closer to €40m (£34.2m).

A gap, but not a chasm. And the timing is no coincidence.

Armband on the turf, questions in the air

Jones, 25, has been at Liverpool long enough to understand what the captaincy means at Anfield. So when footage emerged of him in a heated exchange with Dominik Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas after a 1-0 friendly win over Wrexham, it travelled fast.

In the clip, Tsimikas can be seen tossing the Liverpool armband to the turf. That small act lit the fuse. Jones, already irritated, reacted sharply. The disagreement, played out in front of cameras, quickly went viral across social media.

The flashpoint appeared to centre on the chain of command: Szoboszlai, wearing the armband, passed it on to Tsimikas when he was substituted. For a homegrown player who has come through the Academy and waited his turn, that decision clearly cut deep.

It was, in football terms, a meaningless friendly. To Jones, it plainly did not feel meaningless at all.

Inter smell opportunity

Clubs at the top level do not wait. They pounce.

Inter have read the room and moved quickly, attempting to exploit any hint of unrest. A switch to Serie A, to a title-winning side that could offer a more central role, is the kind of proposal that can make even a boyhood player stop and think.

For Jones, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2027, the equation is not simple. He knows Liverpool, the city, the expectations. He also knows that a new head coach brings uncertainty, even when the public message is glowing.

Andoni Iraola has already nailed his colours to the mast. He has spoken in emphatic terms about Jones’ importance and quality, praising not only his game but his Scouse identity and character. In Iraola’s eyes, Jones is not a squad piece; he is a pillar.

Words, though, only go so far. Minutes, responsibility, and trust over a long season will decide how convincing that admiration truly is.

Liverpool face a familiar dilemma: cash in on a valuable asset at what might be close to peak market value, or double down on a player who embodies the club’s pathway from Academy to first team.

Jones, for his part, stands at a personal crossroads. Stay and fight for a prominent role in a side returning to an intensity-first style under Iraola, or embrace a fresh start in Italy where Inter are clearly prepared to build a pitch around him.
