Liverpool's Urgent Need for a Right Winger: Jamie Carragher's Warning

Jamie Carragher has never been shy of saying what Liverpool fans are already thinking. This time, his warning is blunt: Liverpool need a right winger – and they need one “desperately”.

With the club opening negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, the conversation around Anfield has quickly turned from excitement to confusion. Barcola is highly rated, young, direct, and dangerous in the final third. But he is also, crucially, a left-sided attacker.

For Carragher, that is the problem.

When Sky Sports floated the idea on X that Barcola could be the man to step into Mohamed Salah’s shoes, Carragher cut straight through the optimism. “No, he plays on the opposite flank!” he fired back, shutting down the notion that the PSG winger is a like-for-like answer to the looming Salah question.

This is not just about one transfer target. It is about squad balance. Carragher pointed to a growing logjam on the left, highlighting that Liverpool already have “three players who could play from the left in Rio/Gakpo/Wirtz & no one who plays from the right.”

The concern is obvious. Liverpool are edging towards a future without Salah, or at least a future where his minutes need to be managed carefully. The right wing has been his territory for years, the zone from which he has defined an era at Anfield. Losing that threat without a clear replacement is a risk a club with Liverpool’s ambitions can hardly afford.

Carragher’s message cuts through the noise of the window. While others debate names and potential, he is focused on profile and practicality. Liverpool can sign another talented left winger. They can’t ask one to become Salah.
