Manchester United's Search for No.9 Hits Setback with Pio Esposito Signing

Manchester United’s search for a long-term No.9 has hit its first major setback of the summer. Pio Esposito is staying at Inter Milan.

The 21-year-old, one of Serie A’s most coveted young forwards, has decided to sign a new contract with the Italian champions despite what has been described in Italy as a full-scale “attack” from United for his signature.

United push. Inter refuse to blink.

United’s recruitment team had identified Esposito as a prime candidate to grow into their centre-forward role. Benjamin Sesko is locked in as the first-choice striker, but the plan was clear: add another genuine No.9 to share the load and shape the next era of the attack.

Matheus Cunha can operate up front. Joshua Zirkzee can, too. Neither is a pure penalty-box striker in the classic sense, and both are more naturally at home drifting, linking, creating. Zirkzee, on top of that, may not be at Old Trafford much longer, with Juventus pushing to take the Netherlands international to Turin.

So United looked elsewhere. Chelsea’s Liam Delap was offered, only for the club to turn him down, as revealed by TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey. The bar for the position is high, and the profile is specific.

Esposito ticked those boxes.

A “predestined talent” chooses home

United’s interest in the Italy international was no passing glance. Bailey reported back on June 8 that the club had been actively scouting Esposito in action for the Azzurri against Luxembourg and Greece. Internal feedback was glowing: the feeling inside the recruitment department was that he “possesses the attributes to develop into a top-level centre-forward”.

They were not alone in that view. Esposito has long been regarded as a crown jewel at Inter. In November 2025, club chairman and CEO Giuseppe Marotta described him as “something of a predestined talent for several years” in an interview with FCInter1908, a remark that captured the faith the Nerazzurri hierarchy have placed in his development.

Last season, Esposito began to turn promise into production. Ten goals. Six assists. Forty-eight appearances in all competitions for Inter. Not yet the numbers of a finished article, but more than enough to confirm that the tools are real: movement, intelligence, and the temperament to handle a big stage.

United sensed an opportunity. Inter shut the door.

“No amount of money”

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà detailed just how firm that door slam was. Writing on his website, he explained that Inter “resisted every kind of attack” for Esposito, singling out Manchester United as the main threat to their plans for the 2005-born striker.

His wording left little doubt. There was “no room for manoeuvre”; “no amount of money” would have been enough to break Inter’s resistance. This was not a negotiation. It was a stance.

Pedullà added that Inter had been working for weeks on a renewal, with a base salary figure of around €3.5 million plus bonuses on the table. There was no rush, he noted, because Esposito himself had “always given priority to Inter”.

That loyalty has now translated into a decision. The new deal is edging towards completion, and with it, United’s hopes of prising him out of Milan fade.

United’s striker puzzle remains unsolved

For United, the picture up front looks as intriguing as it is incomplete.

Sesko leads the line. Cunha offers versatility and energy. Zirkzee, at least for now, remains an option but could yet be drawn away by Juventus. The club have already knocked back the chance to move for Delap. Esposito, a carefully scouted and strongly admired target, has chosen to commit his future to Inter.

The message from Milan is uncompromising: some talents are simply not for sale.

The question now is just as uncompromising for United: where do they find the next striker who fits their vision as well as Pio Esposito seemed to?
