Manchester United's Summer Transfer Plans: Fernandes and Hall on the Radar
Manchester United are moving with intent this summer. Not with the scattergun panic of recent windows, but with a clear plan built around Michael Carrick’s blueprint and the looming return to the Champions League.
The club already have one major piece in place. A deal for Ederson has been agreed, the midfielder booked in for a medical in New York and personal terms settled. His unveiling is now a matter of timing, not negotiation.
United, though, are not stopping to admire their work.
Fernandes chase gathers pace
Attention has turned sharply to Mateus Fernandes, and there is growing belief at Old Trafford that the West Ham midfielder will be wearing red before the window shuts.
West Ham are expected to reject United’s opening offer. That was always likely. The London club have set their price at around £80m for the 21-year-old Portuguese, a figure that has already forced one European heavyweight to step back.
Jose Mourinho had pushed for Fernandes at Real Madrid, but the Spanish club are understood to have cooled on the move under the weight of West Ham’s demands. According to journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Madrid now “expect” Fernandes to head to Old Trafford instead.
That expectation is not built on guesswork. United are already in talks, and the player is said to favour a move to Carrick’s side. Weeks of quiet negotiations with his representatives have laid the groundwork, while West Ham have signalled they are prepared to sell at the right price.
United’s bid is not expected to reach the £80m mark. The offer will come in significantly lower, with both clubs thought to be working towards a compromise in the region of £60m. The gap remains, but the mood around the deal suggests a middle ground will be found.
For United, Fernandes would be another powerful piece in a midfield rebuild that could total two, perhaps even three, new arrivals before the season starts.
Lewis Hall in United’s sights
On the left flank, another battle is taking shape.
Lewis Hall has emerged as United’s preferred option to provide competition and cover for Luke Shaw. Carrick wants a reliable, athletic left-back to cope with the demands of a Champions League campaign and a gruelling domestic schedule, and Hall fits the profile.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a standout season at Newcastle United and was unlucky to miss out on England duty this summer. Unsurprisingly, Newcastle have no intention of making his departure easy and will fight to keep him on Tyneside.
They are not alone in the race. Chelsea are preparing a determined push of their own to bring Hall back and beat United to his signature, with more details on that move expected to emerge.
United, though, are firmly in the conversation. Fabrizio Romano reported on his YouTube channel that the club have kept “contacts alive and ACTIVE” with those close to Hall over the last few days, following initial talks weeks earlier. He described United’s interest as “genuine”, stressing that Hall is “one of the targets” and a player they “really, really love”.
Hall is valued at around £55m. Combined with the expected outlay on Fernandes, United are staring at a potential £115m double swoop on proven Premier League talent, underlining the scale of their backing for Carrick.
Romano also reinforced that after Ederson, United plan to bring in at least one more midfielder – possibly two – before turning fully to the left-back position. Hall sits at the top of that list.
Wide plans hit resistance
Not every move is falling into place.
United’s search for a new wide player has taken a hit after a highly rated LaLiga winger rejected their advances. He is understood to be closing in on a big-money move to Newcastle, leaving United to reassess their options out wide.
That setback has not dulled their ambition. The club have explored the possibility of signing a PSG star pushing to leave the Parc des Princes this summer, a sign that United are prepared to think big as they reshape the squad.
Midfield reinforced, the left side rebuilt, a marquee wide player still on the radar. If United land Fernandes and Hall on top of Ederson, the question won’t be whether they have backed Carrick.
It will be how far this new-look side can go once the Champions League anthem returns to Old Trafford.
