Manchester United Target Crysencio Summerville for Left Flank
Manchester United have turned their attention to Crysencio Summerville as a leading solution for their left flank – and, crucially, they look to have a clear run at him.
The West Ham United winger, one of the few to emerge with credit from a grim relegation campaign, is firmly on United’s radar, with Liverpool stepping away from the chase and Arsenal only watching from a distance.
United circle as Liverpool step aside
Summerville finished last season with seven goals and five assists in 34 appearances for West Ham. Those numbers came in a struggling side that slid out of the Premier League, and with relegation confirmed, the 24-year-old is expected to leave the London Stadium before the new campaign kicks off.
West Ham have set the starting price at around £50 million. In the current market, that figure is far from outrageous, particularly when set against the alternatives. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers would command upwards of £80m and could even push towards £100m. Everton have no interest in cashing in on Iliman Ndiaye cheaply either. Matias Fernandez-Pardo at Lille offers promise, but not the Premier League experience United’s recruitment team are prioritising.
Summerville has that, and something more. His club season may have stuttered, but his World Cup reminded everyone of his ceiling. Two goals and two assists in four matches for the Netherlands, before their shock exit to Morocco in the last 32, underlined his ability to deliver on the biggest stage.
Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas describes him as “emerging as a top left-wing target” for United. Inside Old Trafford, he is being spoken of as a “leading” option for that role.
INEOS weigh options on the left
United’s immediate priority remains the midfield. Even so, the new INEOS-led structure is working in parallel on a left-sided attacker, and Summerville has moved towards the front of that queue.
Rogers. Ndiaye. Fernandez-Pardo. All admired. All on lists. Yet, at this stage, Summerville is viewed as the most realistic and balanced option – quality, age profile, and price all aligning more neatly than his rivals.
The dynamic has shifted further in United’s favour with Liverpool cooling their interest. The Athletic reported that the Anfield hierarchy explored a move earlier this year but have since stepped back, leaving United in a strong position, with Arsenal merely monitoring developments rather than driving them.
On Friday, Old Trafford reporter Laurie Whitwell added more weight to the story, confirming that Summerville and Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall are both players of interest to INEOS as they reshape the squad.
Rashford question hangs over the deal
One major variable remains: Marcus Rashford.
Sky Sports report that any move for Summerville could hinge on how United handle Rashford’s future. The forward is due back at Carrington after the World Cup with Barcelona’s £26m option to buy now expired.
Rashford would prefer a return to Barcelona, but he is understood to be open to reintegration under Michael Carrick if the new United manager sees a major role for him. Should Carrick rebuild his attack around Rashford from the left, the urgency for a big-money move for Summerville could ease.
If, however, Rashford’s future drifts back into uncertainty, the logic of a £50m swing at a 24-year-old Dutch international with proven Premier League pedigree becomes harder to resist.
United have missed out on one attacking target already this summer, with Mateus Fernandes opting for Tottenham Hotspur over Old Trafford. They do not intend to watch another slip away so easily.
With Liverpool out, Arsenal watching, and West Ham ready to deal at the right price, the stage is set. The decision now rests in Manchester: double down on Rashford, or usher in a new era on the left with Crysencio Summerville.
