Newcastle United Set for Managerial Shift as German Coach Matthias Jaissle Poised to Replace Eddie Howe
Newcastle United is on the verge of a surprising coaching switch just weeks before the Premier League campaign begins. After five years at the helm, Eddie Howe reportedly wants to step down immediately, according to English media reports. This comes only 22 days before the new season kicks off.
Matthias Jaissle: The New Name in Newcastle's Coaching Lineup
The club seems ready to appoint Matthias Jaissle, a 38-year-old German manager, as Howe’s successor. Jaissle is currently under contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli until 2027 but is said to be in advanced negotiations with Newcastle. His prior experience includes managing RB Salzburg, where he first gained recognition. The transition might be smooth since both Newcastle and Al-Ahli share ownership under the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Howe’s Legacy and Recent Developments
Since taking over in 2021, Howe has overseen a remarkable rise for Newcastle. With significant investment backing his tenure, the Magpies have qualified twice for the Champions League after a 20-year absence and lifted the League Cup in 2025. Despite this success, Howe had been leading preparations for the upcoming season, including coaching three friendlies recently. Newcastle won 4-1 against Bristol City just last Wednesday.
Reasons Behind Howe’s Departure
Reports suggest Howe’s decision to leave solidified within the last 48 hours. One key factor appears to be dissatisfaction with recent transfer market activities. Newcastle has sold important players such as Sandro Tonali, who moved to Tottenham Hotspur for 108 million euros, and Anthony Gordon, who joined FC Barcelona. Captain Bruno Guimaraes might also depart. Meanwhile, the future of German international Nick Woltemade remains uncertain after a challenging first season following his 75 million euro transfer from VfB Stuttgart.
