Olwethu Makhanya Joins Rangers from Philadelphia Union

The Philadelphia Union have cut loose one of their most promising defenders, sending Olwethu Makhanya to Rangers FC in a deal that underlines both his rise and the club’s current reset.

The 22-year-old center back joins the Scottish Premiership giants for a reported fee of up to $4.5 million, a significant return on a player signed just three years ago under the U22 Initiative from Stellenbosch FC. His stock has soared since, capped by a place in South Africa’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.

For Union, this is not just another outgoing transfer. It’s a sale of a starter who grew into a pillar of their backline.

Makhanya made 53 appearances in all competitions for Philadelphia, scoring three goals and, more importantly, anchoring a defense that powered the club to the 2025 Supporters’ Shield. He arrived in July 2023 as a prospect. He leaves as a World Cup defender headed to one of Britain’s most demanding stages.

Union sporting director Jon Scheer paid tribute to that evolution, stressing how far the young center back has come since landing in MLS and how impactful he became in the heart of the backline. The club’s message is clear: this is the right move for the player, and the right time for him to test himself in Europe.

The timing for Philadelphia is far less comfortable.

At the halfway point of the season, the Union sit 14th in the Eastern Conference on 13 points, miles off the pace they set in their Shield-winning campaign. Jim Curtin is gone, Ryan Richter is in as interim coach, and now one of the club’s most valuable defensive assets has departed.

Rangers, chasing titles and European nights, gain a young, World Cup-tested defender with room to grow. Philadelphia, stuck in the lower reaches of the table, must find a way to turn a lucrative sale into a lifeline for a season that is drifting away from the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs picture.
