Raphinha Returns to Barça Camp Ready to Prove Himself
Raphinha stepped through the doors at St George’s Park on Monday with the look of a man who knows this season could define his Barcelona career.
Summer break over, the Brazilian winger has rejoined Hansi Flick’s squad at the England base as Barça crank up preparations for the new campaign and their La Liga opener against Elche on 23 August. The mood around the camp has lifted. One of Flick’s most trusted weapons is back in the building.
World Cup frustration in the rear-view mirror
He arrives carrying more than just his kit bag. Raphinha’s last major outing in yellow and green ended in frustration at the FIFA World Cup. Trusted to start Brazil’s first two group games, he barely made it to half-time in the second match against Haiti, forced off after 39 minutes with a thigh injury in his right leg.
That was it. Tournament over. Brazil crashed out in the round of 16 against Norway, and Raphinha watched the rest from the sidelines, powerless to change anything. For a player who had climbed into the game’s elite conversation, it was a brutal full stop.
Barcelona, though, expect a very different version of him this time: fully recovered, hungry, and ready to work from day one.
No rush into pre-season action
The temptation, of course, is to throw him straight back into the spotlight. Flick won’t do that.
Despite the buzz around his return, journalist Nil Sola reports that Raphinha is unlikely to feature in Barça’s first two friendlies of the summer. The Catalans face Birmingham City on 31 July and Preston North End on 3 August, but with the winger only just joining the group, the coaching staff are expected to hold him back.
The message is clear: this is about the long season, not a handful of warm-up minutes in England.
Flick wants his Ballon d’Or contender back
Under Flick’s guidance in the 2024-25 season, Raphinha hit a level that changed how Europe viewed him. His numbers were outrageous: 34 goals and 26 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions. Those performances pushed his name into the Ballon d’Or conversation and turned Barcelona’s attack into a far more ruthless, aggressive unit.
With him on the pitch, Barça pressed higher, ran harder and attacked with more conviction. Defenders didn’t just track him; they feared him.
Then came last season. Two serious hamstring injuries ripped through his rhythm and cut his influence. He still managed 21 goals in 33 appearances, a return most wingers would envy, but the sense lingered that Barcelona were only seeing flashes of the player who had once dominated entire games almost on his own.
Flick hasn’t forgotten that version. He wants it back.
A tailored plan for a decisive season
Both coach and player have circled the same objective for the coming year: restore Raphinha to that Ballon d’Or-level form and keep him there.
To give him the best chance, Barcelona’s new head of physical preparation, Benjamin Kugel, has drawn up an individual programme designed specifically around the Brazilian’s body and playing style. It is not just about getting him fit for August; it is about keeping him explosive and available in April and May, when titles are decided.
Barça believe that if they can keep Raphinha on the pitch, the rest will follow. The goals. The assists. The pressing that sets the tone for everyone behind him. The version of the Brazilian who once looked like one of the most influential attackers in Europe.
He has walked back into camp at St George’s Park with that standard as the benchmark. Now comes the hard part: proving that season wasn’t a peak, but the start of what he can be.
