Yan Diomande Transfer Battle: PSG vs Liverpool
Paris Saint-Germain have moved to the front of the queue for Yan Diomande, and in doing so may have blown open a transfer door that leads straight to Anfield.
The French champions have now opened talks over a deal for the RB Leipzig winger, one of up to four headline signings they want to unveil at the Parc des Princes this summer. Crucially, Diomande’s camp have told Liverpool that if he leaves Germany in this window, PSG is his preferred destination.
For Liverpool, that message cuts deep.
They have spent months working on Diomande, tracking his rise since last year and positioning themselves as a leading contender for the 21-year-old Ivory Coast international. Inside Anfield, there was a quiet confidence: if Diomande chose the Premier League, Liverpool believed they would be his landing spot.
The problem? This was never a one‑horse race.
Bayern Munich and PSG have been circling, and over the last 24 hours those distant shadows have become a very real threat. PSG have now formally opened discussions to establish what it would take to prise Diomande from Leipzig, while the player’s representatives have made it clear to Liverpool that Paris now sits at the top of his wishlist.
Liverpool saw this coming and tried to sprint ahead of it. One of the driving forces behind their push to get a deal done before the World Cup was the fear of exactly this scenario: a multi-club auction, powered by Europe’s biggest spenders and inflated by time.
Last week, the Reds lodged a package worth around €100m (£86.3m / $114m). Leipzig didn’t blink.
The Bundesliga club have held firm throughout. They value Diomande closer to €130m (£112.2m / $148.2m) and, more importantly, they would rather keep him in Germany for at least one more season before tying him down to a new long-term deal. That stance has not shifted.
PSG, though, sense an opening.
They have been encouraged by Diomande’s preference and by the strong relationship between their transfer advisor Luis Campos and former Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, now Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Inside the Ligue 1 club, there is growing belief that a deal is there to be shaped, even against Leipzig’s tough valuation.
Luis Enrique is a major driving force. He sees Diomande as one of the most thrilling young attacking talents in Europe and has already begun sketching out how the winger would slot into an evolving PSG frontline.
If Diomande walks through the door, someone else may be pushed towards it.
Barcola on Liverpool’s radar
The most obvious casualty is Bradley Barcola.
The France World Cup star endured a frustrating end to PSG’s Champions League campaign, reduced largely to a role off the bench during the decisive run-in. Those close to the situation indicate he has already made it clear: if he cannot secure a guaranteed first-team role next season, he will look for a move.
Interest in Barcola is already intense across the continent. Liverpool are among the clubs watching closely, and Diomande’s arrival in Paris would only harden the likelihood that Barcola becomes available.
Liverpool have long identified the 23-year-old as a potential alternative to Diomande. Reports place his valuation at around €90m (£77.6m / $102.6m), a hefty fee but one that reflects his pedigree and age. New Reds boss Andoni Iraola is said to “love” Barcola’s profile. If Diomande chooses Paris, this could be Iraola’s moment to pivot decisively.
While Diomande and Barcola are tied together by positional overlap and squad dynamics, not every PSG chase is interconnected.
PSG’s four-piece rebuild
Inside PSG, the pursuit of Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche is being treated as a separate operation. The champions view Akliouche as the natural successor to Lee Kang-in, who is closing on a move to Atletico Madrid, rather than as a direct rival to Diomande for minutes.
The rebuild in attack is already well under way after Goncalo Ramos’ club-record switch to AC Milan. With that vacancy up front, Bournemouth striker Eli Junior Kroupi has emerged as one of the leading names under consideration. Work is progressing quietly in the background as PSG piece together Enrique’s new forward line.
And they are not stopping there.
Sources indicate PSG believe they are well placed in the race for Lille wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi. Lille are understood to be open to a sale, provided any agreement includes a loan back for the coming season. That structure appeals to PSG as they try to balance immediate needs with long-term planning.
Any move for Bouaddi, though, is likely to hinge on outgoings in midfield. Fabian Ruiz continues to draw interest from clubs across Europe, but Enrique would ideally like to keep the Spain international for at least another year, valuing his experience in what is increasingly a youthful squad.
Liverpool’s dilemma
Back on Merseyside, the picture is far less comfortable.
Liverpool have poured time and energy into Diomande’s pursuit. They remain huge admirers of his potential and believed they had manoeuvred themselves into a strong position earlier in the summer.
Now the landscape has shifted. PSG hold the player’s preference. Leipzig are still demanding a premium fee and would be happy to keep him. The €100m Liverpool have already put on the table has not been enough to move the needle.
What was once a deal that looked within reach has drifted into dangerous territory. The question for Liverpool now is stark: do they keep fighting for a player whose heart appears set on Paris, or do they move quickly and decisively for Barcola before another European heavyweight beats them to the punch?
