Arsenal Set to Sign Georgia Stanway on Free Transfer
Arsenal are poised to land one of the most influential midfielders in the women’s game, with Georgia Stanway set to join the club on a free transfer from Bayern Munich at the start of July.
The move, agreed in principle and subject only to the 27-year-old passing a medical, will see the England international return to the WSL when her contract with the Frauen Bundesliga champions expires.
Arsenal move for a proven winner
This is not a speculative signing. It is a statement.
Stanway leaves Germany with a haul of four Bundesliga titles in four seasons, a spell in which she became a cornerstone of a dominant Bayern side. Her blend of aggression, drive and technical quality turned her into one of the most complete central midfielders in Europe.
She arrives in north London with a formidable international résumé. A key figure in England’s back-to-back European Championship triumphs and their run to the 2023 World Cup final, Stanway has 32 goals in 91 caps – numbers that underline both her durability and her threat from midfield. At her best, she dictates tempo, breaks lines and decides games.
From Manchester to Munich to north London
Before Bayern, Stanway had already established herself as a central pillar at Manchester City, growing from precocious talent into a leader. In Germany she did more than adapt; she thrived.
Bayern’s director of women’s football, Bianca Rech, made no secret of the club’s admiration for her, praising Stanway’s “commitment and character” and admitting she had “stolen our hearts”. Those comments told their own story: this was not a player being pushed out, but one whose ambition was understood and respected. Bayern knew she wanted a new challenge.
That challenge now lies at Arsenal.
Arsenal’s long game in midfield
This transfer has been years in the making. Arsenal have tracked Stanway for several seasons, identifying her as a long-term target even before last summer’s Champions League final triumph. She fits into a broader succession plan in midfield and a clear push to wrest the WSL title back to north London for the first time since 2019.
The club’s intent is obvious. They are not merely refreshing the squad; they are reshaping its core.
Reuteler set to follow
Stanway is unlikely to be the only major arrival.
Arsenal are close to finalising a deal for Géraldine Reuteler, also on a free, after the Switzerland international’s departure from Eintracht Frankfurt was confirmed. An attacking midfielder who can operate across the front line, Reuteler brings end product as well as versatility: 54 goals and 45 assists in 184 games for Frankfurt, with 10 goals this season alone.
Her performances for the host nation at last summer’s European Championship underlined her status as one of the standout talents in her position. If completed, her signing would add another creative, goal-scoring layer behind the forwards.
A ruthless rebuild
Big arrivals often follow big departures, and Arsenal have already signalled a ruthless summer reset. The club have confirmed that Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina and goalkeepers Manuela Zinsberger and Naomi Williams will all leave at the end of the season.
Those names are not peripheral figures. They are players who have carried responsibility, worn the pressure and, in several cases, defined recent eras. Letting them go clears wages and space, but it also raises the stakes for those coming in.
Stanway and, potentially, Reuteler will not be joining a settled dressing room. They will be stepping into a side in transition, one expected to challenge immediately.
Arsenal have made their move. The question now is simple: with Stanway at the heart of it, is this the summer that finally drags the WSL trophy back to north London?
