Liverpool Secure Víctor Muñoz as First Signing of Iraola Era

Liverpool have wasted no time backing Andoni Iraola. Before he has taken charge of a competitive game, the new head coach has his first signing: Víctor Muñoz, the Osasuna winger whose rise in La Liga has been tracked across Europe.

The club have triggered the 22-year-old’s £34.5m release clause, edging out Newcastle and a clutch of heavyweight admirers to secure a six-year commitment. Muñoz will complete his medical on Wednesday in Atlanta, where he is currently with Spain’s World Cup squad, before the deal is finalised.

This is not a panic buy or a late pivot. Liverpool have followed Muñoz for a long time, but Iraola’s arrival accelerated everything. The Basque coach, who spent the bulk of his playing days at Athletic Bilbao and still has a sharp eye on La Liga, pushed hard for his compatriot once his own appointment was confirmed. Muñoz, a player he knows well and rates highly, quickly moved from long-term target to immediate priority.

Plenty of others had seen the same potential. Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen were both interested, while Barcelona and Real Madrid – clubs Muñoz represented at youth level – also placed him on their shortlists for this summer before turning to other options. Liverpool moved faster, and with more conviction.

The attraction is obvious. Muñoz can operate on either flank and through the middle as a central striker, exactly the kind of tactical flexibility Liverpool want as they reshape the attack for a new cycle under Iraola. His standout weapon is pace – raw, repeated, game-breaking speed – and that trait sits at the heart of Liverpool’s broader recruitment plan for this window, with an emphasis on adding more running power and direct threat.

Muñoz has already nudged his way into the senior Spain setup. He made his international debut in March and scored against Serbia, a sharp introduction that underlined his eye for goal at the highest level. He stayed on the bench in the subsequent draw with Cape Verde, but his inclusion in the World Cup squad at 22 tells its own story about how he is viewed inside the Spanish camp.

One thing his arrival will not do is automatically close the door on Federico Chiesa. The Italian, used only in fits and starts under Arne Slot, could find Iraola’s more vertical, high-tempo style better suited to his own strengths. His future, though, remains unresolved. Chiesa wants more minutes, more responsibility, and is open to leaving if those guarantees do not come.

For now, the spotlight falls on Muñoz. A £34.5m winger, two caps for Spain, forged in the academies of Barcelona and Real Madrid and hardened at Osasuna, walking into a Liverpool side about to be reshaped in his manager’s image.

Iraola asked for pace and versatility. Liverpool have given him both in one signing.
