Real Madrid Signs Ibrahima Konaté on Free Transfer

Real Madrid have moved decisively in the market again, striking a deal to sign Ibrahima Konaté on a four-year contract after the France defender’s departure from Liverpool.

The 27-year-old will join the European champions on a free transfer at the end of June, having failed to reach an agreement with Liverpool over his value and wages. What started as routine renewal talks at Anfield ended in deadlock, and Madrid stepped into the gap.

The Spanish club confirmed they have an agreement in place “for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until 30 June 2030”, adding another powerful option to a back line already stacked with pedigree.

Konaté's Liverpool Tenure

For Konaté, it closes a significant chapter. He arrived at Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m on a five-year deal, seen then as one of Europe’s most promising centre-backs. Across three seasons he made 183 appearances in all competitions, anchoring a defence that collected the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two League Cups.

His exit, though expected once talks stalled, has carried a personal sting. Konaté admitted he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye” to Liverpool supporters when the Reds signed off their Premier League campaign against Brentford on 24 May. “At that moment, I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you,” he said.

Now his focus turns to a different white shirt. Konaté is currently with France at the 2026 World Cup, and his next competitive club minutes will come at the Bernabéu, under the weight and glare of Real Madrid expectation.
