Liverpool Intensify Chase for Diomande as Salah Successor
Liverpool are not just in the race for Yan Diomande. They’re trying to run away with it.
The Premier League club have locked in on the RB Leipzig and Ivory Coast winger as their ideal successor to Mohamed Salah, and they’re backing that belief with serious money and a clear pathway into the team. PSG, for once, look like the club scrambling to keep up.
Diomande is only 19, but the hype around him already feels fully formed. Coaches and scouts rave about his one-v-one ability; defenders dread it. The wider public saw exactly why in Ivory Coast’s World Cup opener against Ecuador, when he went after Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie and tore into him repeatedly down the flank. It was the sort of performance that turns a promising talent into a priority target.
Liverpool had already moved early. David Ornstein revealed that the club opened talks with Leipzig, knowing full well they were dealing with a reluctant seller. The Bundesliga side do not want to lose Diomande, yet the reality of the market is stark: offers around their €130m (£112m) valuation will be taken seriously, however begrudgingly.
That’s where the contest with PSG has taken shape.
Liverpool’s double edge over PSG
On one side, the financial muscle. On the other, squad clarity.
Fabrizio Romano has repeatedly stressed that Liverpool are putting “important money” on the table, and speaking on his YouTube channel, he underlined that the Merseyside club are prepared to outbid PSG on personal terms as well. Liverpool are ready to offer more in terms of contract to Diomande, a decisive move when a teenager is weighing up his next step.
PSG, by contrast, are tangled in their own numbers and their own squad.
They want Diomande. Romano describes them as “very keen.” But they have a problem: there is no natural space for him unless Bradley Barcola is sold. The French champions are not pushing Barcola out of the door, and are instead waiting to see if a “right proposal” arrives for the winger. Only then would a full-scale move for Diomande become straightforward.
Until that happens, PSG are operating with a handbrake on. They are offering less, both in terms of contract and, crucially, in the clarity of his role.
Liverpool sense the opening. Behind the scenes, they are pushing hard, fully aware of PSG’s interest and of the hesitation in Paris. Reports on Tuesday suggested Diomande himself currently favours a move to Anfield, with the chance to work under Andoni Iraola a key part of the appeal. A clear plan, a defined role, and the platform that has already turned wide forwards into global superstars – the pitch almost sells itself.
For PSG, the equation is simple but awkward: if a strong bid lands for Barcola, Diomande becomes more attainable. If not, they must either compromise their squad balance or watch one of Europe’s most explosive young wingers choose Liverpool instead.
The battle is on. The numbers are rising. And with Salah’s long-term future still a live topic at Anfield, Liverpool’s willingness to go harder and faster than PSG for Diomande hints at something bigger: they are not waiting for a new era to arrive. They’re trying to buy it now.
